Your weekly reminder to go truly passwordless! HPE recently suffered a material breach, where usernames and passwords were compromised in a spray attack. This is a timely reminder that if there are no usernames and passwords to breach, the risk is eliminated! Gartner recently published that going passwordless anywhere and everywhere is the way forward. While MFA text to phone is still in use, CISOs would serve themselves and their enterprise by having passwordless on their technology roadmap and deployed in 2024. The cost is less than a cup of coffee per month per user, and the technology is mature. With risk factor disclosure updates on the near horizon for most public companies, forward-looking CISOs would provide confidence by eliminating usernames and passwords in whole as an attack vector, instead of reinforcing the lowest denominator with MFA text to phone. Let's take the necessary steps to eliminate the attack vector in more than half breaches = usernames and passwords. Are you ready to go truly passwordless?TruU, Inc. #Passwordless #CyberSecurity #TechnologyRoadmap #RiskFactorDisclosure

From our own Bill Placke: "Halloween scares came a day early to any CISO who read the October 30th complaint by the SEC against SolarWinds and individually against its CISO. The take aware from this complaint is that CISOs must advocate for increased compliance budgets, as insufficient staffing and resources to address vulnerabilities and alerts do not absolve them from personal liability, even after escalating concerns to the CIO, CTO, and CEO."
CISO Friends and Colleagues and Cyber professionals -- Yesterday the SEC filed suit against SolarWinds as a company and the CISO individually. This complaint is a guide as to how the SEC will pursue "material false and misleading" statements in 8Ks and 10Ks. (An S-1 for IPO is similar to 10K in the relevant areas.) That the SEC sued the CISO individually is an extension of the US policy that the cybersecurity posture of US companies is lacking. SEC (and plaintiffs' lawyers) will scour 10Ks, S-1s and 8-Ks for what it determines in hindsight to be "material false and misleading statements." There are quite some positions taken by the SEC that are worth reading, e.g., the failure of the SEC to acknowledge the astounding number of attack vectors for adversaries or that SolarWinds attack was conducted by Russian State Actors. (Side note - check your cyber insurance as some except State actors breach from coverage.) Paragraphs 5-18 of the complaint is a warning to ensure compliance in substance to NIST and other cybersecurity practices (paragraph 45). However, the SEC also seems to give no weight that compliance is like a balance sheet with a picture in a moment rather than a continuum. Please remember that if you are a calendar year filer, you will have to have practices and processes in place prior to December 31st -- two months! Please note you will have to outline your the processes for identifying cybersecurity threats from email, third-party software and EDR alerts. Please see the SEC complaint that "meeting the industry standards" was not enough when there are known attack vectors and vulnerabilities. Now two shameless plugs -- because I sincerely believe in these technologies that can do the most bang for buck- less than one cup of coffee per month per user! First, go passwordless and continuous authentication using behavioral and biometic. Breach of username and password is THE SINGLE biggest attack vector. Unless an attacker can Mission Impossible your fingerprint, face and behavioral characteristics, your enterprise will be extremely hard to breach and attackers will move on to easier victims. No better solution than TruU, Inc. Next, given that 92% of malware (including ransomware) is delivered via email coupled with signature based EDRs spinning off thousands of alerts there is a near 100% chance malware is lurking in an alert. Unknown Cyber Inc is a paradigm shift in automating the alert investigation and uses a superior semantic based malware detection that battles AI obfuscated malware with its own AI. I would highly recommend you clear out your backlog of alerts prior to year end and disclosures and deploying it to keep your alerts manageable. That the SEC sued the CISO individually is an extension of the US government's policy that it is unhappy with the present state of cybersecurity in US enterprise. https://lnkd.in/gZFr_3_m
