We’re called Pencil because we believe AI will be a tool for creative people, not a replacement - it may even be as fundamental a tool in the future as the pencil was in the past.
Pencil was founded in 2018 with a team from Google, Facebook and Uber with backing from Sequoia and Entrepreneur First. We were acquired by The Brandtech Group in 2023 to pursue a shared vision of bringing GenAI to the Fortune 500.

Using Brandtech’s end-to-end Gen AI marketing platform Pencil ✏️ to create concepts, experiment and make performance predictions, they generated imagery for eight different concepts in a matter of hours 💥 .
The team experimented with hundreds of iterations of the shots, drawing up scenes across continents - which would be all but impossible without GenAI. And no one had to get on a plane for shoots or ship products round the world.
They wanted to make sure that the core DNA of Lancel came through - Parisian elegance, color and joy 🇫🇷 - but with a twist that could only be pulled off with the use of Gen AI.

💥 Made entirely with The Brandtech Group’s Gen AI marketing platform, Pencil ✏️, the series of whimsical images - depicting a dreamlike journey undertaken by a bellboy that begins in Paris and passes through Tuscany, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, India, Bali and Japan - is running throughout June and beyond on a range of social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn.
👜 The Lancel team was able to generate insights and hundreds of potential images for the campaign, experiment and get performance predictions using Pencil. A final set of 72 assets (8 cities with 9 versions each) were generated - and no one had to jump on a plane or ship products.
🌎 This feat would be impossible without Gen AI as experimenting with so many different plans and ideas would have been too costly and time-consuming. Furthermore, flying photographic teams around the world to all the locations would obviously have been an immense logistical operation. The campaign is an example of how a brilliant human creative team is enhanced by and can deliver so much more with AI.
“Initially, we were torn between excitement at this daring adventure and preconceived ideas about the role of AI,” explains Lancel Marketing Director Marine Olivier 💫 . “It was almost magical, and at the same time, we had a certain apprehension, like the fear of being replaced by the machine. But as we immersed ourselves in this collaboration, we quickly realized that the human element remained at the heart of everything. Together, we have achieved something remarkable. It was this synergy between human and machine that gave birth to a campaign imbued with dreams of elsewhere, humor and emotion.”

I know you care about product launches as much as you care about photos of my kids, and I’m breaking my own rule of never posting this stuff b/c I’m genuinely excited (not just LinkedIn excited...) for the potential this brings to accelerate marketers' scalable experimentation with GenAI in a risk-mitigated way. And with experimentation come breakthroughs.
