A Phenomenal Lady of Firsts: Thurgood Law Remembers Thurgood Law alumna, The Honorable Zinetta Burney ‘74. Thurgood Law pays tribute to an icon in our community and Thurgood Law alumna, The Honorable Zinetta Arceneaux Burney ‘74.Judge Burney was founder of the first African American, all-female law firm in the United States alongside attorneys, Joan Edwards, Shelvin Louise Hall, Haroldeen Hartsfield and Algenita Scott Davis. Judge Burney was also the first female, African American on the University of Houston Board of Regents, following an appointment in 1991 by then, Governor Ann Richards. Burney was sworn-in by United States District Court Judge Vanessa Gilmore on Sunday, January 2, 2005 in Houston as the presiding judge of Harris County Justice of the Peace Court, Precinct 7, Place 2, where she served for fifteen years. In 2019, Judge Burney passed the torch of judicial service, along with her robe, to daughter and Thurgood Law alum, Honorable Sharon Burney ’07, during a ceremony in Emancipation Park; Sharon Burney was likewise sworn-in by Judge Gilmore as judge of Harris County Justice of the Peace Court, Precinct 7, Place 2. Judge Zinetta Burney believed in helping others, often routinely prioritizing her constituency before herself. Judge Burney passed away in Houston on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Known for her selfless character, relentless spirit as attorney and judge, and staunch ability to open doors for others behind her, Judge Burney leaves a lasting legacy in the profession for other legal minds to follow. At Thurgood Law, somebody has AMAZING leadership swagger. That somebody is third-year law student, Keith L. Turner III. Keith L. Turner III is taking the helm of leadership by storm. As Student Bar Association (SBA) Vice President and co-influencer of the SBA’s Hall-Turner Administration, Keith remains in strategic partnership with the SBA leadership team, Thurgood Law faculty, staff and student body in “changing the narrative, shifting the culture, and moving the Law School forward”, while also serving as Digital Content Editor of the Thurgood Marshall Law Review. This past summer, he rocked hard as a Summer ’24 Associate in the corporate group at O’Melveny & Myers LLP (O’Melveny) in Houston, delving into liquefied natural gas, merger & acquisition, and oil and gas matters—just to name a few. While at O’Melveny this summer, Keith’s work ethic and productivity were so impressive, he left with a job offer to return in Fall ’25, post law school graduation, as a new Associate in the Corporate & Transactions division of the firm. Oh yes, it’s pretty safe to say, Keith is not just scoring in the game of success; he’s winning. Check out Keith’s photo. He’s sporting shades of blue—a personality color, according to 20th century Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, known to be connected to persons who not only exude decision-making based on pros and cons, logic, and an objective point-of-view, but persons who lead by example and work to uplift each member of their constituent circle. Methodical in his thinking? Yes, that’s Keith. Effective problem solver? Well, after honing his skills scoping mergers & acquisitions and oil and gas matters over the summer, undoubtedly, Keith’s analytical ability for problem-solving is on point. Leading by example? Absolutely! Ascending to the roles of SBA Vice President and Digital Content Editor of Thurgood Marshall Law Review clearly underscores Keith’s influence and leadership ability amongst his circle of peers. Without hesitation, Keith’s work ethic, perseverance, and due diligence at Thurgood Law and beyond resonate he’s planting seeds of inspiration for others to follow and no bones about it, it’s contagious. And, at Thurgood Law, that’s not just considered Thurgood Law success. That’s AMAZING leadership swagger. #ThurgoodLaw #TMSL #OneTMSL #OCM #Students #Leaders #Leadership #KeithTurnerIII #TMSLSBA #TMLR #Amazing #AmazingSummer2024 #PROTECTItIMPROVEItPASSItOn

It’s an AMAZING lifestyle: Studying abroad truly has its privileges. Who had the opportunity to experience a different style of law education during Summer ‘24? Who traveled to London to participate in an international summer law school program and returned with a fresh perspective on culture and ready to apply acquired knowledge and skills for his second year of law school? Post his law school career, who is now better prepared to compete in a global economy? Don’t just ask anyone: Ask Thurgood Law second-year student, Cameron I. Adams. We see you, Cameron. AMAZING: How about being selected to be “Ms. JD” before receiving the JD? One distinguished role Taylar-Made for Taylar Hall! Taylar Hall is one of twelve law students from around the country selected as a 2024-25 Ms. JD Fellow from the Ms. JD organization—an amazing non-profit association that selects outstanding, third-year female law students for a year of mentorship, plus professional and career development. Founded at Stanford Law School in 2006 by six female law students and serving as a unique nexus between the profession and pipeline of diverse attorneys, Ms. JD celebrates women achievements, addresses challenges experienced by female law students and lawyers, and hosts forums for legal practitioners and law students to share in ongoing conversations about varied topics, including gender issues in law school and the profession, career obstacles, mental wellness, and even the bar exam! With the pairing of a female attorney to each Ms. JD Fellow, the Ms. JD Fellowship Program strives to give voice to why it matters that women continue to overcome barriers to achieve gender parity in the profession and is dedicated to the success of aspiring, female attorneys.
