It was a great pleasure to participate in this year’s Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Trial Academy, thanks to former Chancellor Marc Zucker’s leadership for the second year in a row.
Business litigation partner / private arbitrator and mediator / immediate past chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association
Thrilled to have coordinated, for the second year in a row, an intense week-long session of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Trial Academy. My vision for the program last year was to give young lawyers the courtroom experience that they needed, first with interactive exercises and then full trials in Philadelphia courtrooms before Philadelphia judges. By all accounts it was a great success! Congratulations to each of the participants: Pernell Jackson, Krystal Charity, Zahra R. Dean, Lila Sevener, Adam Leasure, Brandon Millinghausen, Esq., Leah George, Esq., Minsoo C. Lee, Minji Kim, Jonathan Silva and William DeVries! Endless gratitude to our participating judges: President Judge Nina Wright Padilla, Hon. Ramy Djerassi, Hon. Nicholas Kamau, Hon. Craig Levin, Hon.Tamika Washington and Hon. Charles Hayden. Great thanks to our lecturers (in addition to yours truly): Thomas J Innes, Thomas “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, Esq., Antima Chakraborty and Ben Post. Our faculty attorneys – many of whom also served as mock witnesses -- were terrific as well, including our current chancellor Jennifer Coatsworth, past chancellor Wesley Payne, chancellor elect Katayun Jaffari, Beena Mallya McDonald, State Civil Section co-chair Kathleen Kirkpatrick, YLD vice chair Joyce Adelugba, Esq., Thomas Paschos, Andrew Throckmorton, April Byrd, Louis Hockman JD/MBA, Edward Robson and Abigail Gustafson. Returning veteran participants who served ably as witnesses included Caroline Bojarski, Andre Mason, Esq. and Siqi C.. And additional witnesses included Sara Donley, Abigail Malmstrom, Rachel Pogolowitz, Pa.C.P., NJCP, Helen HE, Cassandra Bruce and Sandra Royal. It truly took a village! Much appreciation to Mary McGovern and the Drexel University Kline Institute of Trial Advocacy for hosting the first three days of the program and to the First Judicial District for hosting the trials. And last but not least to Allie Hooven of the Philadelphia Bar Association for coordinating the registration, food and many other details and making it all look easy!
