Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.
About us
For more than eight decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to more than 9 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 155 local power companies and 57 directly served industries and federal facilities. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

Great effort by our Transmission construction, maintenance, engineering, and support teams to restore damaged transmission towers and lines in northeast Tennessee after damage from #Helene. Crews are making good progress with restoration efforts, including in areas with very rugged terrain. We have restored all primary connections to local power companies in the area, and they are receiving electricity from the TVA electric grid. This ongoing work will restore redundant power connections for reliability. Our crews want to thank the community for supporting our transmission line restoration. 🇺🇸

The eastern Tennessee River watershed, including locations in western North Carolina, received over 20+ inches of rain from #Helene. The entire area averaged 7.7 inches. That is the equivalent of two months of rain in three days! Our team remains hard at work managing the water from this historic event.

During the #Helene weather event, we shared information from our River Forecast Center (RFC) located in Knoxville. The RFC is staffed 24/7, monitoring weather conditions and forecasts and constantly watching and adjusting the Tennessee River system. The tireless work in the center has remained the same, but one element that has made a significant change through the years has to be the technology. Let's take a look at where we started and where we are now! #TBT

We continue to focus on the safety of Nolichucky Dam in Greene Co., TN. Heavy machinery is onsite, placing large rocks to stabilize the area the flood waters scoured away. We are also removing the old powerhouse because of the damage caused by flood waters - the facility hasn't been in service since 1972. Dam Safety engineers and construction teams are conducting a thorough review of the area and will make any necessary repairs to the dam.

Heavy rainfall and flooding have left a lot of debris in Douglas Lake. To manage this issue, we are installing a one-mile-wide boom near Dandridge, Tennessee, to capture floating and submerged debris in the water. This work will contain the debris until we can work with our partners to remove it from the lake.

Hurricane Helene devastated communities across our region, and we will continue to provide support in any way we can. TVA CEO Jeff Lyash was in East Tennessee communities today, where he met with leaders of the Newport Utilities and Greeneville Energy Authority. Jeff saw firsthand the devastation from #Helene and the ongoing safety work at Nolichucky Dam and provided an update to Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger.
