In this episode on the TVC Podcast, we are excited to have on as our next guest, USMC Veteran, Entrepreneur and Program Manager at VetsinTech, Dave Burlin As a Marine Corps Veteran entrepreneur, Dave never would have known how the skills he learned in the military would apply in the world of business. His first experience was learning sales in the wedding industry working for DJ Connection. After studying companies like Disney & Zappos, and the team at Simon Sinek, he learned the power of a team having a clear vision and a company culture that is contagious. By applying sales strategies from books like the Ultimate Sales Machine, he helped launch operations the 5 cities across the country. Dave then became a Sales & Leadership Coach with Southwestern Consulting. In less than 3 years, he was coaching more than 30 salespeople and sales managers 1-on-1, across more than 15 industries, and helping them increase sales anywhere from 20-300%. For the last 5 years, he has his dedicated his time to serving those who served, volunteering to help Veteran entrepreneur organizations like Bunker Labs. He helps Veterans and their spouses grow and scale businesses, and inspires others to do the same. He continues to serve the community in several other ways, including serving as the Nevada Volunteer State Coordinator for Global Entrepreneurship Week happening during Military Appreciation Month from 18-24 November. Dave offers coaching and consulting to organizations of all shapes and sizes, struggled with hiring, operations, retention, sales, marketing campaigns that miss the mark, training, lack of systems, and more. Meet Sergeant First Class Jorge Otero-Barreto, Puerto Rico’s Rambo who was a United States Army soldier. He earned 38 military decorations during his career. Otero Barreto was born in the town of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, the son of Eloy Otero-Bruno and Crispina Barreto-Torres. His father named him "Jorge", Spanish for George, after George Washington whom Otero-Bruno admired. When they gave him a name inspired by his father’s admiration for America’s first president, the family certainly had no inkling that little Jorge would one day be something of an American icon in his own right, a status earned after becoming one of the most decorated soldiers of the Vietnam War. Otero Barreto received his primary and secondary education in Vega Baja. He attended college at the University of Puerto Rico, studying biology for three years and spending another two years in training at the same school until September 1959 when he joined the U.S. Army, which he chose over medical school in Spain. Between 1961 and 1970, Otero-Barreto deployed 5 times to Vietnam, seeing combat on nearly 200 missions. His 2nd Silver Star came in May 1968, while leading his squad through an enemy held village, killing numerous NVA in their holes as he overran their machine gun positions. While serving with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 502d Infantry Regiment, 101st Air Cavalry Division, was occupying defensive positions around a village north of Hue. The first platoon led Company A into the village to destroy the remainder of the NVA and Sergeant Otero was the leader of the point element. Suddenly the point came under fire from RPGs, machine guns, and small arms firing from enemy bunkers and spider holes. With complete disregard for his own safety, Platoon Sergeant Otero immediately assaulted the nearest machine gun emplacement and killed all three of its crew members. He then led his squad through enemy fire in assaulting three more enemy positions, overrunning them and killing or incapacitating all of the enemy. Platoon Sergeant Otero swiftly moved his squad to occupy vacated enemy positions and place effective fire on the remaining enemy so that other Company A platoons could maneuver. “A warrior is somebody who is beyond himself,” he says. “He doesn’t love himself. A warrior is a person who is willing to give his life for his people. A soldier is not a warrior until he convinces himself of the mission purpose. A warrior has to be a special person. You can see it in their faces – they are warriors.” SFC Jorge Otero-Barreto passed away on 14 Oct 2024 at the age of 87. Marine who served in Iraq and then turned Pastor in Texas, Julio Torres, was detained by US Customs for 6 days and released on the 7th day just in time to honor 4th of July of this year. Here he is the very next week giving his testimony and wants people especially Veterans who are facing mental health challenges that served in Iraq or Afghanistan like he did to never give up. Julio will be participating in an upcoming Veteran’s Day Parade to raise awareness for Veterans who have been detained and deported. He believes this is a veteran issue, not an immigration one and he doesn’t want veterans to be caught in the crossfire of a broken system.
