Born in 1919, Agustín Ramos Calero grew up in Isabela, Puerto Rico. Coming of age during the Great Depression was difficult, and many Puerto Ricans enlisted in the United States Army to earn a secure income. Calero volunteered in 1941. He trained at Camp Las Casa in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and was a member of the 65th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Borinqueneers: a segregated Hispanic unit, mostly made up of Puerto Ricans. This less formal name for the regiment stems from Puerto Rico’s Taíno name, Borinquen. After the United States entered World War II, Calero transferred to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division in Europe. There, Calero famously fought alongside his unit in Colmar, France, in the Battle of Colmar Pocket, which freed the area of Germany’s military control. During this battle, Calero earned the nickname the “One Man Army” after single-handedly killing 10 German soldiers and capturing 21 soldiers. He received the Silver Star for his actions. Calero was wounded four times during World War II but continued serving after it ended and even during the Korean War. During the Korean War, he returned to the Borinqueneers and fought in Busan, Korea. In Korea, the Borinqueneers played a vital role pushing North. They also protected the perimeter of Hungnam, as the 1st Marine Division arrived after a “fighting retreat” and helped with the evacuation of the area. They later travelled near Seoul to drive away the Chinese 149th Division. Even though the military had been desegregated in 1948 by executive order, the Borinqueneers remained segregated for most of the Korean War, since desegregation was a slow process and had many opponents. In 2021, April 13 was recognized as National Borinqueneers Day. This day honors all members of the 65th Infantry Regiment, a regiment that served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War, and pays “tribute to the sacrifices made and adversities overcome by Puerto Rican and Hispanic military service members.” Calero retired in 1962 and died of cancer in 1989. He is buried at Puerto Rico’s National Cemetery in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. We honor his service. #militaryappreciationmonth

Meet Sergeant First Class Jorge Otero-Barreto, Puerto Rico’s Rambo who was a United States Army soldier. He earned 38 military decorations during his career. Otero Barreto was born in the town of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, the son of Eloy Otero-Bruno and Crispina Barreto-Torres. His father named him "Jorge", Spanish for George, after George Washington whom Otero-Bruno admired. When they gave him a name inspired by his father’s admiration for America’s first president, the family certainly had no inkling that little Jorge would one day be something of an American icon in his own right, a status earned after becoming one of the most decorated soldiers of the Vietnam War. Otero Barreto received his primary and secondary education in Vega Baja. He attended college at the University of Puerto Rico, studying biology for three years and spending another two years in training at the same school until September 1959 when he joined the U.S. Army, which he chose over medical school in Spain. Between 1961 and 1970, Otero-Barreto deployed 5 times to Vietnam, seeing combat on nearly 200 missions. His 2nd Silver Star came in May 1968, while leading his squad through an enemy held village, killing numerous NVA in their holes as he overran their machine gun positions. While serving with Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 502d Infantry Regiment, 101st Air Cavalry Division, was occupying defensive positions around a village north of Hue. The first platoon led Company A into the village to destroy the remainder of the NVA and Sergeant Otero was the leader of the point element. Suddenly the point came under fire from RPGs, machine guns, and small arms firing from enemy bunkers and spider holes. With complete disregard for his own safety, Platoon Sergeant Otero immediately assaulted the nearest machine gun emplacement and killed all three of its crew members. He then led his squad through enemy fire in assaulting three more enemy positions, overrunning them and killing or incapacitating all of the enemy. Platoon Sergeant Otero swiftly moved his squad to occupy vacated enemy positions and place effective fire on the remaining enemy so that other Company A platoons could maneuver. “A warrior is somebody who is beyond himself,” he says. “He doesn’t love himself. A warrior is a person who is willing to give his life for his people. A soldier is not a warrior until he convinces himself of the mission purpose. A warrior has to be a special person. You can see it in their faces – they are warriors.” SFC Jorge Otero-Barreto passed away on 14 Oct 2024 at the age of 87. The campaign for getting the Medal of Honor Posthumously for SFC Jorge Otero-Barreto has begun. #medalofhonor #warrior #leadership Hiram Figueroa Jr

Seeking new opportunity in Operations / Planning / Emergency Management.

🎖️Warrior Wednesday🎖️ Originally from New York City, Mendez spent most of his childhood in an orphanage on Staten Island. He enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after graduating from high school and was deployed to Vietnam after bootcamp. While on a search and destroy mission, Mendez and his platoon were suddenly attacked by the Viet Cong. Mendez led a charge to assist Marines who were pinned down by enemy fire, exposing himself to attack. His platoon commander, Lt. Ronald D. Castille – who would go on to serve as Chief Justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania – was severely wounded and unable to move. Mendez shielded Castille with his own body while attempting to bandage the wound. Then, he picked up Castille and carried him behind friendly lines. As he did so, Mendez was shot in the shoulder. Two more Marines rushed to help him, but Mendez refused to let go of Castille and continued to shield Castille with his body during the retreat until Mendez himself was mortally wounded. Mendez was posthumously promoted to sergeant and awarded the prestigious Navy Cross. A post office on Staten Island, where he grew up, was named in his honor and there is now a campaign underway for him to be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
