A client, who is a former heart surgeon, told me about Constrictive Pericarditis, which means there is scar tissue around the heart – like clamps that constrict it. Inflammation causes the heart's covering to become thick and rigid, making it hard for the heart to stretch correctly when it beats. As a result, the heart chambers do not fill up with enough blood. This condition prevents the heart muscle from expanding and instead tightens the muscle. A heart surgeon does surgery to dissect away the scar tissue that is squeezing the heart. Let’s think about this heart condition as a metaphor for our resistance to or defensiveness with others. Our dislike of someone or judgment of their behavior tightens up our thoughts and feelings towards them. We are mentally, emotionally squeezing our heart and not allowing it to expand. It is very much like saying, “I don’t want to make room for you.”

“I heard a nice little story the other day,” Morrie says. He closes his eyes for a moment, and I wait. “Okay. The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He’s enjoying the wind and the fresh air—until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.” My God, this is terrible,” the wave says. “Look what’s going to happen to me!” Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, “Why do you look so sad?” The first wave says, “You don’t understand! We’re all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?” The second wave says, “No, you don’t understand. You’re not a wave; you’re part of the ocean.” I smile. Morrie closes his eyes again. “Part of the ocean,” he says, “part of the ocean.” Tuesdays with Morrie

Dr. C. Terry Warner is a contemporary philosopher whose knowledge has had a significant impact on thinking. In his book Bonds That Make Us Free, he writes, “To the degree that we become receptive and responsive to the truth, life will keep instructing us. It will teach us all sorts of fresh things about matters we thought we already understood.” Warner, C. Terry. Bonds That Make Us Free. Salt Lake City, UT: Shadow Mountain, 2001 #understanding

Sincere presence invites a metamorphosis.                                                                                               A heart-centered relationship creates responsiveness in others.

Heart-Centered Presence Heart-centeredness is central to working relationships. Beneath whatever outcome is desired, everyone wants to belong, be happy and fulfilled. These are issues of the heart.  Therefore, the condition of the leader’s heart matters. To the degree we are in touch with our pristine heart, we can relate to team members, clients, and the underlying aspects of their concerns. The heart is a magnetic, cohesive force. It strengthens relationships; our best emerges. For this reason, merging a powerful heart-energy with our mind and skill set provides support from our entire being and gives everyone welcome benefits.  When our heart is engaged in the relationship, we offer our full presence – clear-sighted, sincere, appreciative, free from resistance. We are authentic, trustworthy and truthful. A harmonic milieu is established. When our heart is engaged, we invite the person we are speaking with to synchronize with our energy and access the whole of what is now possible between us. Meeting the client wholly – mind and heart – generates an exponential capacity, more than the sum of the two of us. This combined awareness illumines the source of the difficulty. Clarity emerges; solutions arise. #heart #leadership #heartcenteredleadership

Have you told someone you wanted to hear their story and then didn’t truly listen? We already had in our mind what they were going to say, and we spaced out, occupying our mind with more interesting things. We run from being present—being open to another. After all, we already know them and their story. Are we aware? Are we welcoming?
