Serving with compassion, bringing relief.

About us

The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (Tzu Chi USA) is a volunteer-based international non-governmental organization established by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, Taiwan, in 1966. From 30 housewives saving 50 NT cents (approx. US 2 cents) from their grocery budget per day to help those in need, Tzu Chi’s footprints of humanitarian aid have now reached 102 countries and regions. The foundation provides community and social services, national and international disaster relief, medical and charitable assistance, education, environmental protection, and a bone marrow donor registry while promoting humanistic values and community volunteerism. Tzu Chi USA, the foundation’s first chapter outside Taiwan, was established in Alhambra, CA, in 1989. Stephen Huang, an American businessman, had visited Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, and meeting this gentle nun, who created a powerful organization and realized seemingly impossible dreams, all for the benefit of others, changed his life. He became a disciple and vowed to bring the spirit and mission of Tzu Chi to the United States. Today, Tzu Chi USA has 66 offices and facilities nationwide, with volunteers and donors striving to make a difference in their communities, serving others unconditionally, and sowing seeds of love and kindness in the Americas.

“No matter what difficulties or setbacks you encounter, you think of what I said. In many situations, when people think of me, they will transform their minds, and their lives change. We must learn to work through the complexities of the world. This is what it means to be a Buddhist practitioner. A saying goes, ‘Learning is about awakening.’” View the full article, “Learning Is about Awakening– Transforming Ignorance into Understanding of Morals,” to keep reading: https://lnkd.in/eEMEViSE #MondayMotivation #MasterChengYen #Compassion

Last weekend, from August 10-12, Tzu Chi USA Headquarters Region volunteers again were in action to provide emergency financial assistance (EFA) to people impacted by the Borel Fire. Having broken out on 7/24, the mostly contained Borel Fire destroyed 223 structures and damaged another 29 in Kern County, located in Central California. With a Local Assistance Center temporarily set up at the Kern River Valley Senior Center in Lake Isabella, CA, Tzu Chi USA volunteers had a station for impacted families to receive EFA. By providing our signature cash cards, altogether totaling $24.8K in relief, 31 separate households, equating to 66 total beneficiaries, have access to immediate funds that enable them to spend towards their most pressing needs. In his upper 70s, one care recipient named Bruce told us he’d use Tzu Chi USA’s cash card “to buy building materials and rebuild my house.” Another, named Dennis, emotionally told Tzu Chi volunteers that the cash card helps solve a big problem of his: paying off his biannual car registration fees. “I was worried,” he told them, as his car would be greatly needed. Another care recipient, though, had a very unique experience. She had received EFA from Tzu Chi USA after another wildfire more than a decade ago. Seeing Tzu Chi volunteers again, she came over to express her gratitude. While it is touching to see so many people find relief in our aid, we also know that the road to recovery is long and difficult. A prepared neighborhood is a safe neighborhood. For when there are heat waves or power outages caused by heat waves, it helps to share in preparedness as neighbors. Be one another’s emergency contact in these cases of disaster, provide each other with necessary supplies to stay cool with or without power, and offer helping hands and shelter when able to make a difference. Cooperation is key in emergencies, and if you are the neighbor more aware of safety tips, pass along the knowledge to ensure safety for all. Have your community ready with Tzu Chi USA and Listos California! Across California, wildfire season unfortunately continues. On Friday, 8/9, Tzu Chi USA volunteers setup an emergency financial assistance (EFA) station at Anza Community Hall in Anza, CA, which has served as a local assistance center for those impacted by the #NixonFire. Having ignited on 7/29, the Nixon Fire has burned 5,222 acres of land, destroying 23 structures, across California’s Riverside County. Tzu Chi volunteers were able to meet with 10 separate households whose homes were either destroyed or severely damaged as a result of the fire. In total, $6,700 in EFA were distributed via cash cards, with the funds ready for each family’s immediate use. They also distributed 11 eco-blankets to provide some physical comfort at a time when survivors have access to so little. We are humbled to have provided aid alongside many other relief agencies, and to meet with each family that was affected. With the support of our compassionate volunteers, who ask questions about survivors’ well being and situation, we know that being able to provide survivors with aid is about much more than just money; it’s about showing them they aren’t alone. Help us continue this impactful work and more with a donation at https://lnkd.in/dmKkXgP #CaliforniaWildfires #DisasterResponse

This past weekend, 35 #TzuChiNorthwest & #TzuChiChico volunteers came together to host its first round of disaster relief distributions for those impacted by the recent #ParkFire in California—providing a grand total of $61.4K in emergency financial assistance. On Sat, 8/10, care recipients came to receive emergency financial assistance (or EFA) from Tzu Chi USA at the Local Assistance Center in Chico, CA, and then on Sun 8/11, at the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) office in Chico, CA. In total, 91 households benefited, and Tzu Chi volunteers provided 72 eco-blankets as well as 71 bamboo banks for families to have the opportunity to pay it forward. In addition to this, our corps of caring and compassionate volunteers spent time with each family to learn more about their situation and offer emotional comfort as many of them opened up about the pain of losing their home and nearly all of their belongings. Care recipients also received a letter of condolence written by Dharma Master Cheng Yen, which left few dry eyes among those who read it. As families cope with their great loss, there is much left to do. Help us provide light, hope, and practical aid that helps disaster survivors move forward in their lives with a donation at https://lnkd.in/dneYmMH #EmergencyAid #ParkFireRelief #StartingOverTogether Tzu Chi Foundation

“Teachers must not only have the heart of a teacher and the heart of a parent, but also the heart of a Bodhisattva. As I often tell myself, we should have a sense of responsibility toward all sentient beings in the world. Education is the hope of life. I hope that teachers do not only focus on how advanced the knowledge they teach is, but that they will also pay attention to the depth of morals and gratitude in the education they provide. Only when students feel loved can they truly give rise to gratitude in their hearts” View the full article, “Learning Is about Awakening– Transforming Ignorance into Understanding of Morals,” to keep reading: https://lnkd.in/eEMEViSE #MondayMotivation #MasterChengYen #Compassion
