Serving with compassion, bringing relief.

About us

The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (Tzu Chi USA) is a volunteer-based international non-governmental organization established by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, Taiwan, in 1966. From 30 housewives saving 50 NT cents (approx. US 2 cents) from their grocery budget per day to help those in need, Tzu Chi’s footprints of humanitarian aid have now reached 102 countries and regions. The foundation provides community and social services, national and international disaster relief, medical and charitable assistance, education, environmental protection, and a bone marrow donor registry while promoting humanistic values and community volunteerism. Tzu Chi USA, the foundation’s first chapter outside Taiwan, was established in Alhambra, CA, in 1989. Stephen Huang, an American businessman, had visited Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, and meeting this gentle nun, who created a powerful organization and realized seemingly impossible dreams, all for the benefit of others, changed his life. He became a disciple and vowed to bring the spirit and mission of Tzu Chi to the United States. Today, Tzu Chi USA has 66 offices and facilities nationwide, with volunteers and donors striving to make a difference in their communities, serving others unconditionally, and sowing seeds of love and kindness in the Americas.

Tzu Chi USA partnered with MANNA Food Bank to distribute blankets from a local farmer’s market in North Carolina in the wake of #HurricaneHelene. Many survivors of the hurricane still don’t have power or running water, so the shelf-stable foods from the food bank and the blankets from Tzu Chi are going to make a big difference. In about two to three weeks, Tzu Chi’s team will return to North Carolina to provide emergency cash cards to families whose homes have been destroyed or majorly damaged. You can provide your love to these families in need by contributing to our hurricane relief fund today! Until November 15, all hurricane relief fund donations will be matched up to $1 million. On October 21, a team of Tzu Chi Miami volunteers traveled to #FortPierce and #Wellington, Florida, to assess the needs of communities impacted by #HurricaneMilton.  In Fort Pierce, volunteers met with Faye Evans from the American Red Cross, whose aid has been invaluable to volunteers in this assessment process. The team of volunteers first proceeded to Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a disaster area of great concern. Spanish Lakes Country Club Village is a community where many older adults reside, with hurricane insurance far beyond what most residents can afford. Milton generated roughly four dozen tornadoes in Florida, causing significant damage and heartache across the communities impacted. Even so, volunteers encountered inspiring locals like Mrs. Jeanna McKamey, who radiated hope. We also met Mr. and Mrs. White, whose stories of survival highlighted the importance of togetherness in the face of adversity. Our journey continued at Lakewood Park Church, which strives to serve the community despite damage to its roof. When volunteers arrived, there were supplies for the neighborhood inside and outside the church, with volunteers organizing the items.  Volunteers then traveled to Wellington to meet another affected family. The family comprised 17 members who lived in two mobile homes that were completely destroyed — the comparison between Google Maps screenshots and the day’s photos was shocking. At least three of the family members were hospitalized with serious injuries, and other family members relocated to several different locations. Our relief is forthcoming in Florida as we organize venues for distribution events. Help us #DoMore. From now until November 15, donations made to our #HurricaneRelief fund will be matched up to $1 million. It is vital to locate your closest emergency shelter if you find yourself and your loved ones in a critical situation. Types of shelters can range from converted gymnasiums, community centers, or more permanent spaces that are meant to withstand extreme conditions. Tzu Chi USA and Listos California want to remind you that an emergency shelter can provide a multitude of services such as water, food, medical aid and psychological support. Shelters may be set up to supply protection and safety for many essential needs of a community such as harsh conditions, extreme temperatures, or potential threats. By creating a safe and healthy environment for families to rehabilitate during emergencies, shelters are essential to creating privacy and safety from exterior surroundings and threats. After conducting assessments, Tzu Chi USA’s team on the ground in North Carolina distributed warm eco-friendly blankets to people in need in the wake of #HurricaneHelene. Many are still without power, and temperatures have been dropping below freezing, so these blankets warmed the bodies and hearts of survivors. 500 blankets arrived from Tzu Chi USA New Jersey Office. The team worked with a local organization of veteran volunteers to distribute the blankets in multiple locations. Valerie, a recipient, said that “I think a blanket is symbolic of love…knowing somebody cares, it’s like a warm hug.” Tzu Chi’s blankets are used around the world in disaster relief situations such as this one. They are made of recycled plastic, symbolizing the circle of love and how the love you give can be paid forward. From now until November 15, you can pay your love forward by donating to our hurricane relief fund, which will be matched up to $1 million. The spirit of joy and relief shone brightly at last week’s distribution in #NorthCarolina for survivors of #HurricaneHelene. Working hand in hand with the community, Tzu Chi volunteers distributed 84 heavy eco-blankets at the drive-in food distribution organized by MANNA FoodBank at the WNC Farmers Market in Asheville, NC. More supplies at the farmers market included essentials like personal hygiene products, diapers, fruits, and other pantry staples. Volunteers were deeply moved to see the smiles of disaster survivors upon arrival, and it left a lasting emotional impact. Volunteers are committed to continuing to provide aid to those affected by #hurricanes, ensuring survivors know they’re not alone in this time of need. Let’s do more. From now until November 15, donations to our hurricane relief fund will be matched up to $1 million.
