As an angel investor with a Pre-Seed AI deal currently in diligence, there are two things I want to flag about the $27.1B deployed into AI: 1️⃣ VCs will always invest in trends - Happened w/ DotCom in 90s/00s, w/ Future of Work during COVID - It’s a numbers game and you gotta play (big) to win - I know this. I get it. It makes sense. Next. 2️⃣ VC signaling can also be dangerous and irresponsible - Leads founders to believe they HAVE to become an AI startup - Sheep-like VCs (with 0 background/knowledge) invest out of FOMO - The same VCs often convince startups to shift entire business Notions like “The AI train is leaving the station & you need to be on it,” though completely warranted, can be misleading for some founders. Yes. AI is taking over and creating some revolutionary advances – but not *all* startups need to be AI startups. Remember in 2021 when crypto and blockchain had a whopping $32.8 billion in VC funding? All of that went to shit when ONE GUY took advantage of booming trends and showed the market what happens when you don’t look close enough. Case in point: Founders, while VCs may convince you to build an AI startup, or shift your entire business to focus on AI for the sake of fundraising, Be cognizant that funding trends come and go, and new trends are always on the rise – No matter how revolutionary, how sustainable, or how life-changing the current technology is. Shoutout to James Callan for bringing this to the feeds.
