About us

The Berkeley Music Group (BMG) is is a 501 c3 non-profit organization that operates The UC Theatre, an independent community minded 1,400 capacity multi-tiered live music venue with youth education programs. Our mission is to present a vibrant and diverse range of live performances to advance the understanding and appreciation of music, culture and education in the east bay. We provide inclusive, diverse, and culturally rich music programing as well as transformative youth education programs. Our Concert Career Pathway Grads come from diverse backgrounds; 50% are young women, 70% are people of color, over half are from low-income households. 80% of program graduates have been successfully placed in jobs. Our Concert Career Pathways Education Program teaches young people ages 17 to 25 the technical, creative, and business aspects of concert and event promotion.  This nine month program develops critical and creative thinking skills necessary to become successful in the 21st century workplace.  Our hands-on work-based learning model is a combination of free workshops and paid internships where young people learn the best practices in essential jobs such as:  production manager, event coordinator, stage manager, floor manager, stagehand, floor staff, sound and lighting mix and support, event budgeting, ticketing and box office operations, bar operations, general marketing and promotions, social media promotions, booking, and more.   We offer these programs to youth attending local schools, under-served youth through partnerships with established non-profit community organizations, and to the general public. Our Education committee is made up of a number of Non-profits who work with under served youth including... RYSE in Richmond, East Bay Center for the Arts in Richmond, Berkeley Youth Alternatives in Berkeley, Youth Uprising in Oakland, Y-Teen Center in Berkeley, & the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley. www.theuctheatre.org facebook.com/theuctheatre

⭐ Congratulations, Cohort 8! ⭐ We are excited to announce that our 25 Concert Career Pathways (CCP) interns and mentees are ready to take over the live music industry! This milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support of incredible community, and for that, we are grateful. To our donors, professional partners, staff members, friends, and family; this achievement is a testament to what we can accomplish together, and we are profoundly thankful for each and every one of you who has played a part in this journey. #ConcertCareerPathways #Interns #Graduation #LiveMusic Photo by Marc Fong

Meet Brian Alvarado / Concert Career Pathways Intern at The UC Theatre Cohort 8 “Concert Career Pathways has been more than just an internship for me, it has given me the hope and confidence that I will be able to find a job that I love in the live music industry.” From a young age, Brian felt a strong connection to music and all that it encompasses. His involvement in school choirs and high school bands led him to discover the unique Punk/DIY community, where he truly learned the bonding power of live music events. While attending a show at The UC Theatre, Brian realized that the CCP program seemed like a perfect fit for him, as it aligned perfectly with his values. Throughout the program, Brian has appreciated the unique education and industry knowledge gained, from all aspects.  He has had the chance to connect with other passionate individuals in the industry and has been empowered to apply his talent buying knowledge in the CCP Presents project, Blenderfest. You can catch Blenderfest on June 7th at The Ivy Room. Get your tickets here! https://lnkd.in/gx9inCdC Join us in supporting Brian’s journey by becoming a monthly sustaining donor. We are extremely excited to expand Concert Career Pathways Workforce Development program into Seattle! Through a partnership with Third Stone and New Rising Sun we have launched the 2nd cohort for Bumbershoot's Workforce Development program, and continue to remove the barriers of entry into the live music and festival industries. Phase 1 of this 7-month program is complete! Soon these 19 young people will be matched with their paid festival and venue internships for continued hands-on learning using festival as a classroom to complete the program. https://lnkd.in/gcPvVdDN

Meet Hyazinth Baumann  / Concert Career Pathways Intern at The UC Theatre Cohort 8 “I’ve learned that I have a strong inclination towards education work and that my passion lies not just in performance or in the music industry, but as a general desire and passion for community building.” Hyazinth began their journey with The UC Theatre as a member of the Floor Staff team, where they discovered the Concert Career Pathways (CCP) program and its 9 month, educational program. Growing up, Hyazinth had family who were in the industry, which is where their natural curiosity for performing arts began, as well as the overall act of bringing people together through such mediums. Through the program, Hyazinth has continued their path as an Education Intern, and is excited to look for a bigger role that focuses on working with youth in arts and education. Outside of The UC Theatre, Hyazinth has continued to bring folks together, and has recently joined an art collective called DIY Museum that aims to curate queer-centered arts events around the Bay Area. Join us in supporting Hyazinth by becoming a monthly sustaining donor. Just $25 a month can make a huge difference! 💌 Donate today: https://lnkd.in/g2YYsEFd #ConcertCareerPathways ##ConcertCareerPathways  #MusicCareer #BayArea #DonateNow #Innovative

Meet Sada  Linn / Concert Career Pathways Intern at The UC Theatre Cohort 8 “I have been loving my internship with the Marketing department. It has expanded my graphic design abilities exponentially and it feels like I learn something new every shift which is very fulfilling.” Growing up surrounded by a family of musicians, Sada has had a strong connection to the arts for most of her childhood. From attending live shows and performing alongside her dad and sister, the live performances have always left Sada feeling enamored by their energy and magic. By joining the CCP program, she hoped to be able to merge together her love for art and music, and has since joined The UC Theatre as a Marketing and Graphic Design Intern. Being a part of the program has allowed Sada to explore the possibilities within the industry, as well as play a role in big projects like commemorative poster design. In fact, Sada has had the chance to collaborate with the Marketing team on designing posters for J Boog and Hot Mulligan, both of which were sold-out shows! Join us in supporting Sada’s journey by becoming a monthly sustaining donor.
