As was announced in June 2024 at the Nuclear Energy Security Summit co-sponsored by #UCANPower, the US Navy formally expressed its interest to explore nuclear power to support energy security at Navy and Marine Corps installations and their surrounding communities. While the RFI at link focuses on four Navy installations and three Marine Corps installations for an initial assessment of DON locations that could be used for nuclear power, additional installations may be considered beyond the 7 bases in VA, MD, and NC. Outstanding news for those States. Now, all three military services have active engagements with nuclear power developers and utilities to meet energy resilience and reliability goals through the placement of nuclear reactor on or near military bases. As with the other Service initiatives, we look forward to supporting Asst Secretary of the Navy (EIE), Meredith Berger and the Navy team on this critical endeavor for our Nation’s energy future. Congrats to DOD SCO's Jeff Waksman, INL's Jess Gehin, and the #BWXT Advanced Technologies team on a significant milestone to meet the joint urgent operational need for a resilient, carbon-free energy source capable of delivering reliable 24/7 power to mission-critical DoD operations in remote and austere environments. In a contested logistics theaters where power generators are under assault, we'll need to the ability to quickly establish an assured power source for a technology advantage on the battlefield. We at UCAN are committed to supporting the successful deployment of #PELE for national security. Also thanks Northrop Grumman, Rolls-Royce SMR Liberty Works, Torch Technologies, Inc., and of course, Congress, led by the Defense committees for continued funding. UCAN Power - United Coalition for Advanced Nuclear Power is pleased to congratulate our President, the Honorable Ted J. Garrish for recently receiving the United States Nuclear Industry Council's lifetime achievement award. Ted has been a mentor to many people in the nuclear sector throughout his years of government service and private sector work. We look forward to his future achievements in helping expand opportunities for nuclear energy deployments. Way to go, Ted! And thanks to USNIC for recognizing a great leader and advocate for nuclear. The lifetime achievement award is based on Ted's service in the following positions: -Assistant Secretary of Energy, Office of International Affairs (2018-2021) -Acting General Counsel, U.S. Department of Energy (2018-2019) Principal Deputy Director, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (2003-2005) -Member of the President's Commission on Catastrophic Nuclear Accidents, Price-Anderson Commission (1988-1990) -Assistant Secretary of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy (1987-1989) -Assistant Secretary of Energy, Office of Congressional, Intergovernmental & Public Affairs (1985-1987) -General Counsel, U.S. Department of Energy (1982-1985) Lucian Niemeyer Jeffrey "Jeff" C. Wow! recent agreements by technology companies to lock up clean, reliable nuclear power for data centers are sending shockwaves for those of us concerned about the ability of our country's energy sector/grids to meet our exploding demand for electricity. We need to quickly add more nuclear power generation throughout the national grid (in addition to other sources) to maintain stability and to protect life. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission must support this urgent national need by developing a comprehensive safety license process for advanced reactors which are engineered and fueled for safety and easier deployment. Senior defense leaders delivered strong messages on June 26 on the future of nuclear power to meet DOD energy resilience and sustainment goals at the Nuclear Energy Security Summit, “Securing the Future of Nuclear Energy in a Contested Environment.” The Air Force’s Deputy Assistant Secretary, Nancy J Balkus, and Navy DASN Michael McGhee, SES, PE, SCO’s Project Pele lead Jeff Waksman, and the Army’s Annie Kammerer. Chief, Nuclear Power Branch at the Office of the Chief of Engineers. KEY UPDATES – In future conflict with peer adversaries marked by the threat of cyber attacks, a contested logistics and energy environment starts here in the Homeland at our military bases. The Air Force is “all in” on nuclear power projects including and beyond the Alaska demonstration project. The Navy will be issuing a Request for Information targeted around October 2024, seeking creative concepts to explore siting privately-owned, NRC-licensed nuclear reactors at Navy and USMC installation to supply military and community power needs. The Army ‘s offering with the DOD Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) resulted in an overwhelmingly positive response from over 40 vendors. Project Pele for the development of a portable, modular reactor is progressing well with full congressional support. Each Service wants to partner with nuclear reactor developers and utilities to deliver reliable power for critical national security missions. Overall – excellent news from DOD coming during the UCAN power event! Please share with your nuclear network Brian McCormack Jim Howe Jeffrey "Jeff" C. Crater L.
