Congratulations to Debarun Mukherjee, a PhD student in Geophysical Sciences and one of 50 students selected as a 2024 Quad Fellow! Debarun analyzes meteorites and asteroids to investigate planet formation and studies Rare earth Elements with the aim of developing sustainable energy technologies. The Quad Fellowship, now in its second year, supports exceptional graduate students pursuing STEM fields in the United States. Debarun intends to study samples from Phobos, a Martian moon, to determine if Phobos was formed by an impact on Mars or captured by the planet instead. See this moon below (via NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona).

Congratulations to Ava Polzin, one of 50 students selected as a 2024 Quad Fellow. A PhD candidate in Astronomy & Astrophysics, Ava researches star formation to figure out how stars form (or don’t) in some of the smallest dwarf galaxies. The Quad Fellowship, now in its second year, supports exceptional graduate students pursuing STEM fields in the United States. Last week, GRAD hosted its annual Academic Job Market Summer Camp, a week of workshops and panels designed to share best practices and create solidarity among students and postdocs seeking academic positions. 140 graduate students and alumni across all divisions and professional schools attended in-person and virtual sessions featuring advice from UChicagoGRAD and the Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL). Attendees learned and asked questions about application documents such as the Cover Letter and Research Statement before gaining insights about interviews, teaching demos, and campus visits. Students and postdocs also had the opportunity to learn from 20 faculty alumni on hiring committees and hear stories from recent hires, receiving hard-won wisdom about what works. Thanks to our faculty alumni speakers: Yasmine Baktash, Joya John, Kathryn E. McHarry, Ph.D., Amy Skjerseth, Abigail Crites, Andrew Poppick, Josiane Broussard, Juan Fernando Ibarra Del Cueto, Julia Burdick-Will, Jacqueline Vayntrub, Ari Bryen, Wouter Van Limbeek, Shana Marie Augustin, Mike Bosscher, Youngjo Im, Daniel Strand, Brett Aiello, Erin Atwell, Elizabeth Lee, and Agnes Mondragón-Celis. Thanks to Michael Le Chevallier, who moderated the Mission Driven Institutions panel. And many thanks to Steffen Blings (featured below, leading a workshop) for his leadership in organizing the sessions and to everyone who shared their knowledge--especially Samuel Harris of the CCTL. #Academia #PhD #Postdoc #highered #alumni #professors
