We congratulate UChicago's Professional Education instructor Barbara Gastel for being the 2024 recipient of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) President’s Award. She has been a pioneer in the field since its inception. Her influential work and teaching have not only cemented her status as a leading expert in the field but have gone far in making the field what it is today. “One of the overriding factors is that it’s a helping profession. Although you’re not directly treating patients, you’re writing for the public and you’re helping people maintain or increase their health; if you’re writing for biomedical scientists or healthcare providers, you're helping them to provide good healthcare or to advance medical knowledge,” she shares. UChicago's graduate bridge program launches a product manager into the tech frontier. Graduate Student-at-Large (GSAL) alumnus, Cole Simner, took advantage of the GSAL program to test the waters on returning to school, take courses in a field he had no previous experience, and build his resume and graduate school application. "The GSAL program allowed me to not only build the skills needed and put those courses on my resume but also demonstrated that I could do graduate engineering coursework, and more importantly, I could do it at UChicago." He is now in a new role as a product lead for a Fortune 500 company's machine learning platform and a student in the University of Chicago Masters Program in Computer Science.
