🏠 💪🏻 Ever wonder why some buildings better withstand impacts from hail, wind, rain and wildfire? Join me on #WednesdayswithWoodward on Wednesday, July 24 at 1 pm ET for an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) Research Center in Richburg, South Carolina. I’ll be joined by IBHS President and CEO Roy Wright; Chief Engineer Anne Cope; Research Project Engineer Christopher Sanders and Lead Research Engineer Faraz Hedayati. 💨 We’ll see IBHS’s full-scale test chamber and massive wall of 105 wind turbines that simulate (very strong!) wind. ❄️ We’ll go inside the hail lab to learn how they create realistic hail and shoot it through a cannon to evaluate the performance of common building materials like shingles and siding. 🔥 We’ll witness a full-scale wildfire demonstration to preview the latest research. Register here https://lnkd.in/gpBDQRYY and join us! Mariella Magan is one of the MS in FinTech programs newest alums! Check out her most recent post where she is sharing her ecosystem involvement in FinTech & InsurTech. Thank you, Mariella!
𝐌𝐢𝐝-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐖𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐔𝐩! ✔️ Attending various events to learn about business cases from FinTech and InsurTech and network with people from these industries has been a transformative experience, underscoring why technology and data are at the center of decisions in these industries. 𝐁𝐮𝐭, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 / 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡? Though definitions vary, most consider them as the way to adapt financial and insurance services which leads to the disruption of products by technology-supported solutions making organizations resilient to emerging customer needs and new solutions providers. As new solutions enter the market, data becomes vital to create and accelerate their impact. Special recognition here to the insurance industry that has found quite creative ways to collect data. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦? Solutions can be built by incumbents, startups, tech consulting firms, and even tech companies. But whoever develops it, what has impressed me the most is the collaborative environment within this ecosystem allowing some companies to create remarkably market-fit, tailored solutions. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? Through software development-based practices. Scrum is the preferred framework nowadays as it allows transparency, inspection, and adaptation. It’s no coincidence that one of the first companies to implement it was Fidelity Investments (as mentioned in the Scrum Guide). No matter the framework, the goal is to satisfy complex client needs in a highly regulated environment. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬? Although LinkedIn is the best tool to e-network, I've found the following resources useful to find events: • 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀: Lu.ma and Eventbrite (subscribe to your preferred hosts) • 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 (with common backgrounds): in my case, Latinas in Tech and the ALPFA NY chapter have set up wonderful opportunities to network. • 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 can also help identify events and important dates (that might repeat next year). For example, thanks to This Week in FinTech, Zhera List, and Fintech is Femme, I started attending the NYC FinTech and Tech weeks. • 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 reach out to your coordinators, frequently check your email, and join clubs. Thanks to UCONN I was able to attend conferences.
