Workers in Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s former Isotope Development Lab (Building 3038) are removing the water tanks that shielded hot cells as they prepare to remove the hot cells from the portion of the building known as the Alpha Handling Facility. Removing this equipment is necessary to support ongoing deactivation and prepping the facility for demolition. #EnvironmentalCleanup

Workers rerouting utilities around Y-12 National Security Complex’s Alpha-2 continue making progress as they install new steam piping along Second Street. This work is happening simultaneously with other crews who are doing the last prep work to safely demolish the main Alpha-2 facility. Meanwhile, multiple crews of pipefitters, welders, carpenters, laborers, and riggers are installing new piping systems around facilities like the Old Steam Plant. #EnvironmentalCleanup

To support future deactivation, workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Building 3517 Fission Production Development Lab drilled a hole through a hot cell’s shield covers to gain access into the cell. They are surveying and capturing images using a specially designed tool. This work is critical to the understanding the work environment and the deactivation scope that must be completed.  #EnvironmentalCleanup

Crews continue deactivating the hot cell structure that used to be part of the Radioisotope Development Laboratory at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They are installing a sleeve through an opening to provide a protective, smooth pathway for the crew to move tools and waste in and out of the cell opening. The structure is scheduled to be demolished next year. #EnvironmentalCleanup
