NIEHS Director Rick Woychik recently spoke with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health faculty dean Andrea Baccarelli about how our molecular “fingerprints” can shed light on both our past exposures and health trajectories. Read the conversation at https://bit.ly/4i6QE1f #NIEHSFactor

Between 23% and 44% of EU and UK agricultural lands are at risk of losing organic carbon in their topsoil, our latest study reveals. 🌱📉 Soils are a crucial carbon reservoir, with EU agricultural topsoil alone containing over ten times the CO2 of current EU annual total greenhouse gas emissions. However, the climate crisis has increased the loss of soil organic carbon. This could pose a significant threat to soil productivity and climate resilience, as organic carbon is essential for maintaining soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient supply. Our study identifies targeted, more effective carbon management practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change and enhance food security. A new groundbreaking German study proves that pesticides spread much further from the field than previously believed. A team of scientists led by Professor Dr. Carsten Brühl tested topsoil, vegetation, streams and puddles from 78 locations over a 180 km stretch, from remote areas in the UNESCO forests on the mountain ranges to the farmland in the Upper Rhine area. The research team detected a total of 63 pesticides. Almost all measurement sites were contaminated. Residues were found in 97% of the soil and vegetation samples, often in complex mixtures of several active ingredients. This cocktail of pesticides is especially problematic because interactions can occur and effects can be amplified. The worrying results are consistent with previous smaller-scale studies in the South Tirol area in Italy. Large scale and prolonged pesticide use is a major factor in the sharp decline in populations of insects and other organisms essential for farming, as highlighted in our biodiversity campaign. The researchers see pesticide reduction as the only way to reduce the damage to biodiversity. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/euakWUgA

Today, ChemFORWARD launches pfasID, a free web-based tool that simplifies the process of identifying PFAS. This tool was developed as part of PFACTS, a collaborative initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) Directorate. Led by IBM, PFACTS brings together academic researchers, industry partners, and nonprofit organizations including ChemFORWARD, to develop innovative solutions to identify PFAS, accelerate the search for substitutes, and capture PFAS from air and water. Learn more about how this tool will help identify and eliminate these “forever chemicals”: https://lnkd.in/eKRes8zb #saferchemistry #IBM #PFAS

🌍 We cannot solve the #climate crisis while overlooking a major part of the problem — chemical production. 👇 Here are four reasons why efforts to combat climate change must also tackle #chemicals: 1️⃣ The chemicals industry drives oil demand. Petrochemicals are projected to account for around half of the growth in global oil demand between 2017 and 2050 — more than trucks, aviation, and shipping. 2️⃣ The chemicals sector uses more electricity than any other manufacturing sector in the world. For instance, bulk chemicals represented around one-third of total US industrial energy consumption in 2019. 3️⃣ Plastic is made from oil and chemicals, and is therefore a major driver of climate change. Production is growing steadily and is projected to triple between 2015 and 2060. 4️⃣ Climate technologies too often rely on hazardous chemicals. There are established alternatives to these toxic chemicals, but there is still a mistaken assumption that they are necessary for the green transition.

𝐅𝐥𝐮𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 = #𝐏𝐅𝐀𝐒 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 As the temperature starts to rise this spring 🌸, it’s time to talk about something that’s heating up our planet: fluorinated refrigerants (f-gases). ⚗️These #foreverchemicals are wreaking havoc on our planet, responsible for a staggering 63% of #PFAS emissions in the #EU. But there’s hope, we can stop this! 🤔𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰: 🥶 F-Gases are widely present in our daily lives, from food cold chain to mobile air conditioning. 🏭 They’re responsible for 63% of EU PFAS emissions, releasing a massive 75,000 tonnes annually. 🆗Cutting Fluorinated Gases = massive improvement on the PFAS crisis. 🙌📻 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬: 🌱Europe has a roadmap to replace F-Gases with safe, energy-efficient alternatives. Natural refrigerants are already here and ready to take over in nearly every application. In fact, most of the PFAS-free technologies in refrigeration, heating and cooling are made in #EU. ✅Now's the time to act! Companies and governments must step up and make the switch ASAP. 💙Cooling our lives doesn’t need to harm our planet. It can be clean, sustainable, and safe for all! #FGases #PFAS #ToxicFreeFuture #ForeverChemicals ➕More information 𝑭-𝑮𝑨𝑺𝑬𝑺, 𝑨𝑵 𝑼𝑵𝑷𝑹𝑬𝑪𝑬𝑫𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑬𝑫 𝑪𝑨𝑺𝑬 𝑶𝑭 𝑪𝑯𝑬𝑴𝑰𝑪𝑨𝑳 𝑷𝑶𝑳𝑳𝑼𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵 https://lnkd.in/evETgsMa

This is unbelievable research. The world is losing 4-14% of its staple crops due to microplastics. The research shows future impact could be as significant to world hunger as future global warming. I have a confession to make. I used to think concentrating on plastic pollution was often a misdirection of our precious time. Many environmental campaigns focusing on plastic rubbish I resented, thinking the carbon crisis was so much more pressing. This is obviously not true. The fact that this research about widespread loss of crops to microplastics is only revealed now shows how hidden its impacts are.
