This week for our UKFCU cultural highlight, we are recognizing Marta! She proudly embraces her Guatemalan heritage and has a deep appreciation for traditional foods like tamales, uniquely wrapped in banana leaves and filled with a rich mole-like sauce.
Marta finds joy in soccer, a sport she has loved since childhood. In Guatemala, where the sport is referred to as football, it is celebrated and culturally intertwined with daily life. With over 33,000 children playing soccer each year, it serves as a powerful unifier, bringing communities together and instilling a sense of pride in national competitions.
A highlight of her culture is the All Saints Day or Day of the Dead Kite Festival, celebrated annually on November 1. This vibrant occasion allows families to honor their loved ones by decorating graves and sending colorful kites into the sky. This beautiful tradition symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth, seamlessly blending remembrance with festivity.
Born in Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala, Marta is eager to learn K’iche’, a native language of the Mayan people. Her favorite phrase, “A new beginning,” resonates deeply with her. She believes that every time we start something new, something else comes to an end. Change is constant, and as we evolve, we embrace new opportunities that arise from the conclusion of our previous experiences.
Marta shared that in recent years, she has had the opportunity to meet her biological cousin in the United States. Both adopted, they are grateful for the chance to connect and are eager to learn more about their biological families and heritage, deepening their understanding of their roots.
Marta's story exemplifies the richness that diversity brings to our community. By sharing her unique experiences and cultural practices, she enhances our understanding of the world and inspires us to embrace our differences. As we celebrate her journey, we are reminded that our diverse backgrounds contribute to a stronger, more connected UKFCU and a world where every story matters.
