  • Combatting drug trafficking is one of the vital parts of the work of the Joint Interagency Task Force – and, as part of their studies with the US National Defense University, British Brigadiers Andy Watkins and James Coote learnt how it tackles the scourge in Key West, FL. Both Brigadiers Watkins and Coote are studying alongside US and international peers on the CAPSTONE General Flag and Officer course - a curriculum that prepares officers for senior leadership through conferences and visits to U.S. headquarters. Speaking of the experience, British Army Brigadier Coote said “CAPSTONE provides a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the US military and – as important – to build a robust network of peers. I feel hugely fortunate to have been able to attend.” 🇬🇧-🇺🇸

  • “From the far reaches of the globe we were all brought together to learn, not just a curriculum, but from each other.” - US Navy Commander Jake Guarino.

💭Did you know that international course members on the Advanced Command Staff Course (ACSC) are presented with a bronze cormorant pin badge at the end of their studies? The pin is a record of achievement for completing ACSC, and is presented by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. The pin may be worn by course members on their uniform subject to local military dress regulations. One of this year’s recipients has been Lieutenant Commander Jake Guarino of the US Navy. Speaking of his experience of studying at the Defence Academy, and bringing his family with him, he said: “To obtain a greater depth of understanding we must reach beyond our comfort zones and knowledge. The opportunity to travel and engage with other people and perspectives does not come often in life and its value cannot be measured. This is precisely the opportunity that ACSC offered to my family. From the far reaches of the globe we were all brought together under one roof to learn, not just a curriculum, but from each other. The friendships that were forged here between families will never be forgotten and will surely have an impact on generations to come. For truly the greatest strength of a nation is in its relationships and in those we can call friend in our time of need.” ACSC supports UK military officers, international allies and civil servants to develop the intellectual edge required to achieve success on operations and leadership in government. ACSC study focuses on the following themes: 👉understanding the world through a theoretical grounding in international relations and strategy 👉managing the defence enterprise by developing business skills 👉applying the military instrument in the Information Age as part of an integrated force

Mrs Guarino is wearing a light blue dress.
  • Congratulations to Col Karen Peek (late Royal Artillery) and Lt Col Edward Swift (Royal Signals) who graduated alongside US peers from the National War College and the College of Information and Cyberspace respectively. Their courses focused on strategy and both gained extraordinary insight from senior military, political and industrial leaders as well as their US peers. The UK is a strong supporter of the US Joint Professional Military Education Programme, providing Officers to the National Defense University every year.

Foreign Secretary | Member of Parliament for Tottenham

Walking into King Charles Street for the first time as Foreign Secretary last Friday, I passed the bust of Ernest Bevin. Bevin was an inspirational Labour Foreign Secretary – and a personal hero. Proud of his working class origins. Firmly internationalist in outlook. And committed to realism, a politics based on respect for the facts. Nowhere was this clearer than in his role helping to create the NATO Alliance seventy-five years ago. As Foreign Secretary, he was equally committed to supporting the nascent United Nations. But he recognised that “naked and unashamed” power politics would limit its ambitions. Establishing NATO therefore became central to his strategy for how to protect Britain and our allies against future aggression. Moscow protested that this new grouping targeted them. But, while Bevin made every effort to engage the Soviet Union in dialogue, he dismissed such criticism. If that was how the Kremlin felt about a defensive alliance, it said much about their intentions. Seventy-five years on, the wisdom of Bevin’s approach is as clear as ever. Multilateral institutions like the United Nations remain indispensable. But they are struggling under the strain of multiple challenges. With a return of war to our continent and security threats rising, strengthening Britain’s relationships with our closest allies is firmly in the national interest. NATO is the cornerstone of our collective security. Today, I am joining the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary at the NATO Summit in Washington DC. Our commitment to NATO and Britain’s nuclear deterrent is unshakeable. The war in Ukraine has only reinforced the enduring centrality of NATO. But as in Bevin’s time, Kremlin disinformation about NATO’s role is rife. I am as dismissive of this as Bevin was. If Putin feels threatened by a purely defensive alliance, that says much about their own intentions. It is Russia that has ridden roughshod over its neighbours’ sovereignty and conducted assassinations on Europe’s streets. It is Russia that has walked away from its international commitments, leaving a trail of lies and broken promises. As Foreign Secretary, I will do all I can to build on the great legacy Bevin left us. At a time of rising insecurity, we join our allies in marking NATO’s immense contribution to our collective security and renew our determination to invest in the most successful defensive alliance the world has ever known.
