In his INEC Closing Address, VAdm Paul Marshall, DG Gateway at the UK MoD, urged engineers to regain their strategic voice and inform choices so we can adapt at the speed of relevance, quoting Second Sea Lord, VAdm Martin Connell CBE: “if we do not innovate we risk becoming obsolete”. Majoring on 2 themes of collaboration and skills, he noted that “we are most successful when the military, industry and academia come together” and with “no single navy dominant, collaboration is essential”. On skills he suggested that the role of engineers needs to shift and a clear investment strategy for skills is needed. The challenge is “more than just focusing on numbers” as we must “reduce the burden on engineers and increase the speed to competence”. He noted that during the conference “some of the best ideas had come from the youngest and smallest voices” and that INEC had enabled us to come together to discuss the “common cause of engineering without the burden of politics”. Leaving us with a challenge that we “must be able to experiment and fail in peace so we can adapt and win in war”. #imarest #naval #engineering #royalnavy

RAdm Jeremy Bailey, Chair of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC) introduced the final plenary session of this exceptional and thought provoking event. Nick Smith of UKNEST-member GE Vernova addressed the themes of “Lean, Mean & Green” with a perspective on the application of containerised nuclear power to the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier; suggesting that in warship design we must “host the future, we don’t have to predict it”.

The next milestone to fully dismantle Swiftsure has been reached with Babcock International Group awarding the recycling contract to Veolia UK. A collaborative effort across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, around 90% of Swiftsure’s structure and components can be reused or recycled. This builds on work already completed by the Submarine Dismantling Project which is delivering a safe, environmentally responsible and cost-effective solution for the dismantling of the UK’s decommissioned nuclear submarines. #SDA #UKDefence #SubmarineDismantling

Day 2 of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) combined International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC) and International Ship Control System Symposium (iSCSS) was opened by Captain Rinze Geertsma Royal Netherlands Navy, the iSCSS Chair. In the keynote address delivered by Sarah Kenny OBE, CEO of UKNEST-member BMT, we heard about the importance of considering the skills and expectations of the future workforce. “People will have to deal with a huge amount of data” with “ethical decision making at its heart” and “we need to nurture these skills now”. Sarah went on to encourage delegates to “actively break down the barriers to collaboration”, concluding: “the future is full of challenge but also incredibly exciting.”

Was delighted to deliver the keynote address at the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) #INEC2024 International Naval Engineering Conference earlier today alongside my US Navy and Royal Australian Navy colleagues. The need for rapid innovation and collaboration is compelling and we all have an important role to play.

The Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord, VAdm Martin Connell CBE, delivers his keynote address to the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST)’s International Naval Engineering Conference (INEC) in Liverpool, noting that “with threats diversifying and an ongoing technology revolution, the character of war is changing at a remarkably fast pace.” He goes on to describe an increasingly interconnected world and the emergence of uncrewed systems that challenge traditional concepts. As such, “linear thinking and adherence to current processes will not suffice” and “we must be comfortable challenging convention.” He then challenged conference with: “if uncrewed and autonomous systems are revolutionising how we do our business, why are so few operational and what must we do to adapt?”
