Last night our TAPs Committee convened outside of its usual working sessions to celebrate Steve Foster’s retirement. Steve has been a fixture on the committee for over 15 years and through his role at Georgia Power Company brought relationships with many jurisdictions across the state who have now benefited from ULI’s technical assistance. Steve’s commitment to ULI and the program was unmatched - in his own retirement from GA Power in 2022, he agreed to chair the TAPs program! It is with great excitement that we announce the return of our annual YLG Mentorship cohort. By matching young professionals (mentees) with experienced ones (mentors), this program fosters an exchange of professional ideas, friendship, and expertise among participants. Each group will consist of two mentees to one mentor and will require active participation from both sides in garnering a fruitful pairing. Furthermore, each group will meet on their own time at the cadence of their choosing outisde the four scheduled group events – November 7th, February 4th, April 3rd, and June 4th. Applications are due by COB September 19th. Late submissions will not be accepted. All who receive an invitation into the program are required to have established ULI membership before accepting their invitation and to pay the program fee by November 1st (application submission is free). Yesterday, we hosted an inspirational event constructed to bring thought leaders together who are doing innovative projects from a design, build, and financial perspective. Our goal was to use ULI as a forum to lift up these examples across our region and state and discuss what barriers need to be addressed in order for them to happen at scale. Our planning committee led the charge, and we want to give thanks to Ellen Garland, Steve Hinkle, Ashley Jones, Patricia Luna, Amanda Rhein, Jay Silverman, Sarah Weston, APR, and Sal Lalani for their time, commitment, and passion on this issue. Jim Heid, FASLA kicked us off with a keynote on Building Small. We then transitioned to a rockstar panel line-up including Ted Terry, Ashani O'Mard, Eric Kronberg, and Joel Dixon who shared ways they are causing good trouble and highlighted the importance of innovation, building community AND healthier communities, inter-generational housing and affordability. Following the panel discussion - we opened up the forum to roundtable discussions where 10 table leaders highlighted the specific work they were doing from cottage court development, to co-living, leveraging church owned land for development and all the mechanism of how that happens from zoning, finance, and design. Thanks to this group of devoted UrbanPlan Committee members, Heather Hubble, Kenwin Hayes, Sr. - AICP, CEcD, EDFP, CCIM, Todd Semrau, Nathan Logan and Geoff Koski for taking your day and becoming trained as an UrbanPlan Instructor. An additional thank you to Deborah Cleary for making the trip to ATL to lead this training. We have some awesome UrbanPlan events brewing and are thankful to our Committee and trained volunteers that continue to help make this program possible.

We wrap the 2024 cohort recognition of our new ChangeMakers with Patrice Ruffin Dowdell, AICP, Assistant City Manager of the City of Brookhaven, Georgia. In 2020, she was recognized by Engineering Georgia magazine as one of the Top 100 Influential Women in Georgia Engineering as a professional dedicated to sustained improvements to the state in the areas of planning, design, construction, governance, education, and public service.

We continue our recognition of our new ChangeMakers cohort with Patricia Luna. Prior to beginning her role as Senior Program Officer, Housing Funds at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, after several years working in Wells Fargo’s LIHTC lending line of business, she gained expertise in Low Income Housing Tax Credit and New Markets Tax Credit transactions. Patricia is passionate about affordable housing and community development, and believes her work at the Foundation can help change the face of Atlanta.
