On March 5, the Government of Canada has published the State of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Report to provide a science-based foundation for future actions and consultations with industry and other stakeholders. This report is proposing to add the class of PFAS, excluding fluoropolymers, to Part 2 of Schedule 1 to Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA). In line with the report, Canada proposes to prioritize action through a phased approach: • Phase 1: Address PFAS in firefighting foams (not currently regulated), due to high potential for environmental and human exposure • Phase 2: Address the uses of PFAS in consumer products where alternatives exist, such as certain textiles, ski waxes, building materials, and food packaging materials • Phase 3: Evaluate sectors requiring further consideration through stakeholder engagement and further assessments This approach will be open for consultation to all interested parties from March 8 until May 7, 2025. Innovation news: UL Solutions announced plans to develop an advanced automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) laboratory in Toyota City, Japan, to provide independent, third-party testing to help manufacturers protect against electromagnetic interference that can cause critical systems in vehicles, like braking and engine control, to malfunction. EMC testing measures performance and reliability levels and helps manufacturers demonstrate adherence to global standards, enable legal market entry worldwide, and safeguard against malfunctions caused by interference. The planned 25,000 square-foot facility is expected to feature extremely high-voltage chambers capable of simulating real-world operating conditions for various electronic devices and systems. UL Solutions continues to address the need for more independent, third-party automotive EMC capabilities in Japan.
