You will see 2125 purple flags at UMass Memorial Medical Center this week in honor of Overdose Awareness Day on August 31. Each flag represents a life lost in 2023 to an opioid-associated overdose in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. On Wednesday, UMass Memorial Health caregivers, families and friends gathered to honor those lost in the last year.

UMass Memorial Health's family medicine program was the first in New England and this year is proudly celebrating 50 years of caring for patients, from newborns to seniors. Let's celebrate our family medicine physicians — specialists qualified to treat most ailments and provide comprehensive health care. They often serve as the first point of contact for their patients' health concerns. They help navigate the health care system while fostering a trusting relationship with their patients over time and across generations. Today, we honor all of you! 

Meet Ednamara Vautour, a PCA I and Clinical Support Staff at UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, who has a love and passion for patient care. "I love working in health care because my work is an opportunity to make a difference and provide care for my patients and their families, who may be anxious or emotional. When I help them with daily tasks they can not complete, I do it with empathy and compassion which I think is essential to make them feel comfortable and may speed the healing process. My favorite part of my job is taking care of my patients and making sure they're comfortable. The most memorable moment of my career so far has been when I had a patient who made me feel special. We had a very good connection, the patient spent almost a month in the hospital, every time I went to the room to clean or feed we had a good time talking, singing and dancing, I used to do everything I could to try to get a smile from my patient, and this patient unfortunately passed away. I felt very sad but I knew I had to try to acknowledge those emotions, but I was constantly thinking patient even after work. I love working at UMass Memorial Health because I feel like it is part of my family. When I'm not working, I can often be seen studying English."
