It's been a busy and productive week over at Umbrage this week but I wanted to share my thoughts on some new models that came out this week. Gemma 2 - same "Gemma License" that I ragged on before, where they require you to keep updating your model whenever they decide to release a new version of Gemma 2. This means re-evaluating the quality of every prompt in your application. I could not recommend this for production, regardless of the quality of the model. Claude 3.5 Sonnet - Very impressive. Try it on on Anthropic's Claude website and turn on "Artifacts". I've uploading screenshots of website and asked it to recreate it in a single page of HTML and it's blown me away. In some tasks this seems better than using ChatGPT with 4o. I'll still have to caveat that Claude is still "too safe" sometimes and tasks that any reasonable person would be fine with might get blocked. To me, that's not reliable enough to use in production with more open-ended tasks like Agents with tool usage. They still have some work to go there on balancing for safety. I hope that was helpful.
