The Minnesota law purports to criminalize “realistic” deepfakes of candidates for office in Minnesota disseminated before an election without the candidate’s consent. It was expanded in 2024 to ban political deepfakes 90 days before a party’s nominating convention and to disqualify candidates convicted of sharing deepfakes from holding office. The UMLC is challenging this attempt to quash First Amendment protected political satire. https://ow.ly/S8Jj50TG077

Update on the Alpha News case seeking the release of police body camera footage of the arrest of Senator Mitchell: The City of Detroit Lakes filed a response brief on appeal, which was unexpected since they didn’t oppose our motion at the district court level. Our reply is in, and now we wait for a hearing date.
