About us
UNCDF is the United Nations' flagship catalytic financing entity for the world’s 46 LDCs. With its unique capital mandate and focus on the LDCs, UNCDF works to invest and catalyze capital to support these countries in achieving the sustainable growth and inclusiveness envisioned by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Doha Programme of Action for the least developed countries, 2022–2031. UNCDF builds partnerships with other UN organizations, as well as private and public sector actors, to achieve greater impact in development, specifically by unlocking additional resources and strengthening financing mechanisms and systems contributing to transformation pathways, focusing on such development themes as green economy, digitalization, urbanization, inclusive economies, gender equality and women’s economic empowerment. A hybrid development finance institution and development agency, UNCDF uses a combination of capital instruments (deployment, financial & and business advisory and catalyzation) and development instruments (technical assistance, capacity development, policy advice, advocacy, thought leadership, and market analysis and scoping) which are applied across five priority areas (inclusive digital economies, local transformative finance, women’s economic empowerment, climate, energy & biodiversity finance, and sustainable food systems finance).

🌊 Week One Wrap-Up #CBDCOP16 This week, the sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) kicked off in Cali, Colombia, focusing on progress related to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). In opening statements Minister of Environment in Colombia, and President of COP16, Susana Muhamad, highlighted that effective ecosystem restoration could contribute nearly 40% to climate stabilization, emphasizing the urgent need for a "double movement" of decarbonization and nature restoration to combat biodiversity loss. Throughout the first week a key theme has noticeably emerged: while solutions for biodiversity conservation are available, funding commitments are lacking. Participants have tirelessly urged governments to redirect financial resources from harmful subsidies and emissions inducing actions toward nature preservation and sustainable nature-positive development. The Global Fund for Coral Reefs (#GFCR), the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the UN Environment Programme, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held various engagements throughout the week, showcasing solutions and calls for increased action to support coral ecosystem resilience, including: 🪸High-Level Ocean Day Opening Remarks: UNEP’s Executive Director Inger Andersen stressed that humanity is an integral part of biodiversity and called for a holistic "one health" approach, showcasing GFCR as a successful blended finance model. 🪸Seaflower Fund Launch: Co-launched by GFCR, Fondo para la Accion Ambiental y la Niñez and partners, this blended finance mechanism aims to benefit 77% of Colombia’s coral reefs and support 70,000 community members. 🪸Impact Loan Facility for Marine Conservation Launch: A groundbreaking facility lachrd by Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas, BNP Paribas, GFCR and UNCDF, aimed at enhancing sustainable finance for Marine Protected Areas in the Global South. 🪸Ocean-Finance Roundtable: A UN-led session focused on creating a transformative global finance vehicle, bringing together states, NGOs, and ocean finance experts. 🪸Case Studies for Ecosystems Resilience Session: In partnership with the Netherlands Pavilion, GFCR showcased successful investment case studies from various countries that benefit communities and ecosystems. Further, the GFCR co-sponosored #ForCoral Pavilion led by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), held more than 20 events and strategic meetings spotlighting coral reef ecosystem solutions and needed actions! Stay tuned for more updates as #COP16 week two begins!
