In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina, members of the community have jumped into action. #UNCGAlumna Jessica Arias '23, director of Burlington Animal Services, is leading efforts to reunite displaced pets with their families and provide care for those in need. With the help of local and national animal welfare groups, over 400 pets have been rescued since the storm.

We extend our deepest sympathies and support to all the Spartan alumni, students, and families affected by the destruction of Hurricane Helene. We hold close those hit the hardest by this historic storm — whether they’re part of our Spartan community, UNC System community, or our larger North Carolina community. There are more than 7,500 Spartan alumni living in western North Carolina alone, and we wish to extend the full support of our alumni family for the long recovery ahead. While donating to organizations on the ground providing direct aid (such as the NC Disaster Relief Fund) is a great place to start if you’re looking to support the effort, we also want to make available ways to support Spartans directly. By visiting https://lnkd.in/ebZ3mCZA, you can contribute to the SAFE fund (Student Assistance Fund for Emergencies), the Spartan Food Insecurity Fund, the UNCG Counseling Center, or the Minerva Rescue Grant. These funds will directly support the Spartans who need it most. Our sincerest gratitude to everyone working within our community — and on the broader recovery efforts — to support one another in this time of need.
