In a world facing an unprecedented number of emergencies, stories of hardship and resilience emerge. This is one of them. Meet Vumilya, who fled insurgency with her young children to seek safety in Uganda. Her journey from escaping conflict to rebuilding a new life came with many challenges, including the disruption of her children’s education and development. Thanks to the Learning for Life program, co-created by UNICEF and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vumilya can access essential education, health and nutrition services for her children. This support gives her family not just a sense of normalcy but hope for a brighter future. For five years, Learning for Life has worked with communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda, helping thousands of refugee families like Vumilya’s develop the skills they need to break cycles of poverty and violence — ensuring they don’t just survive, but thrive. Visit the link in our comment below to learn more about Vumilya’s inspiring story and the impact of Learning for Life.

UNICEF’s Yasumasa Kimura is on the ground in Jdeidet Yabous, Syria, where thousands of families from #Lebanon have fled, seeking safety and refuge. "Many arrived after days on the road,” said Kimura, “carrying only the bare essentials and accompanying their exhausted and traumatized children." UNICEF is actively responding across Syria and the region, assessing critical needs and providing urgent assistance to children and families caught in this crisis.

The U.S. Senate recently introduced a bipartisan resolution commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the Americas being declared polio-free, recognizing the efforts of our partners like Rotary International in the fight to #EndPolio — everywhere, and for good. While we celebrate this historic achievement, we must remember that until polio is eradicated everywhere, children everywhere remain at risk. We remain committed to ensuring every child is vaccinated. Together, we can make a polio-free world a reality. #EndPolioNow

Today we mourn the loss of a true humanitarian and NBA legend, Dikembe Mutombo. Dikembe was a towering figure in both stature and as an advocate for children around the world throughout his life. We are so grateful for his leadership on the UNICEF USA National Board. We saw Dikembe's compassion and commitment to our mission many times in his travels with UNICEF USA. In 2016, he joined us on a visit to see nutrition programming in Mozambique, and made time to play basketball with a local school team in Maputo. The joy on the court was clear. He leaves a legacy of hope for children. He will be dearly missed.

During last week’s Concordia Summit, our President and CEO, Michael J. Nyenhuis, joined leaders from Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to dive into how climate change, gender and health care are interconnected in the fight to #EndPolio. Visit the link in our comment below to catch this #Concordia24 conversation and learn how we can end polio — for good.

Children don’t start wars — but they pay the highest price. Fourteen-year-old Zeinab and her family had to flee their home in #Lebanon as the cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah rapidly escalated. Zeinab's family are among more than 210,000 people in Lebanon forced to leave everything behind in search of safety. The violence must end.

“We searched tirelessly for a place to protect us,” says Rawiya, a mother in Beirut, #Lebanon. Rawiya is one of the estimated 201,000 people in Lebanon who have been forced from their homes by an escalating cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. UNICEF is working to provide emergency aid to children and families caught in the intensifying violence.
