Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion
Non-profit Organizations
UCRF is a non-profit organisation that affects systemic change in the fashion sector.
About us
Planetary systems are under threat. Fashion and clothing products and activities contribute to the destruction of these systems. They also contribute to the increasing disconnection between humans and Earth. We, the Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion, recognise that the response of the fashion sector to the intensifying ecological crisis has been – and continues to be – over-simplified, fragmented and obstructed by the growth logic of capitalist business models as they are currently realized and practiced. Further we recognize that uncritical research findings, duplication of research, reduction and misuse of scientific and technical knowledge reinforces and speeds up this over-simplified condition in the fashion industry. It is our view that concerned fashion and clothing researchers can no longer remain uninvolved or complacent and that as researchers, we need to conduct ourselves in new ways. We call on fashion researchers to unite for concerted action and leadership over the use of scientific and artistic knowledge that is more relevant to and commensurate with the multiple crises we face. For us this action requires both that something fundamental is disrupted and something significantly different is offered. We are committed to examining and accelerating the uptake of diverse ‘other ways’ in the fashion sector.

New open access paper available - 'Decentering Durability: Decarbonizing and Decolonizing Ideas and Practices of Long-Lasting Clothes'. Happy to announce that Kate Fletcher's and Anna Fitzpatrick's paper exploring decolonial understanding of durability in clothing has been published by Fashion Theory open access. The work was part of the LASTING research project, led by Kirsi Laitala at SIFO, OsloMet, Norway. Long time UCRF members may remember the call for research participants made through the UCRF Small Ads several years ago... once again a huge thank you from Kate to all of those who took part in the research. From the abstract: Durability is widely recognized as a key feature of materially resourceful, lower-carbon clothing lives. Yet most of what is known about long-lasting garments is rooted in Euro-American ways of thinking, and reproduces its structures, priorities, values and resulting actions. This paper brings a decolonial concern to understandings of clothing durability to enlarge the conceptual boundaries around it, including those that break apart dominant ideas and approaches to clothing durability in order to show difference. It presents both the “workings” and the “findings” of a small research project, ‘Decentering Durability’, examining both how research is conducted as well as what is uncovered at the intersection of decolonizing and resource-efficient, decarbonizing agendas for fashion. #UCRF #research #activitistknowledgeecology

New paper on balancing profitability and environmental impacts in fashion “Hello fellow members, My latest paper on how to reduce environmental impact of fashion retail assortments while balancing profitability is available online! Our study adopts a system-focused approach that incorporates consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay (measured through an experiment), retailer costs and pricing, and potential environmental impact improvement policies. By studying how to design and price a product line that balances profits and environmental impacts, we evaluate how policy changes might affect profitability, total impacts, and the dynamics among the three parties involved. Our experimental design also includes a manipulation (showing a short educational video) to study the impact of increased consumer awareness as a reconciling mechanism. Always happy to discuss the findings, and to get feedback from our community. Disclaimer: the paper is quite long, and technical at times, but the essence of it is contained in the introduction and discussion sections. The paper can be read here. Jean-Sébastien Matte”

New Publication: "Fashioning Sustainment: Harnessing Historical Knowledge for Sustainable Fashion Futures" “Dear friends and colleagues, Annebella Pollen and I edited the new Special Issue of Fashion Studies, titled "Fashioning Sustainment: Harnessing Historical Knowledge for Sustainable Fashion Futures." The issue stems from a conference of the same name we organised at University of Brighton in January 2022. Our goal for this issue is to explore dress and fashion histories that can make critical contributions to sustainable futures, which we understand as futures which can be sustained. The contributions explore overlooked histories of, and new perspectives on, resourcefulness, reuse, creative ingenuity, remaking, repair, mending and sharing in the twentieth century and consider how these intersect with histories of global modernity, urban development, policy, craft, class, cultural identity, gender, sexuality and body politics. The issue is free for anyone to access at this link. I hope you will find the special issue interesting and useful for your own research and teaching. Feel free to circulate the link and spread the word! Dr Alex Nora Esculapio”

This is truly devastating. A fire at the Kantamanto Market (West Africa’s largest secondhand clothing market) leaves thousands of retailers displaced and shops destroyed We stand in solidarity. This is from The Or Foundation, explaining how we can help: 1. Know someone working in Kantamanto? Reach out and offer support and comfort, words of encouragement mean a lot at this time. 2. Donate to supplement our efforts. --Momo: +233(0)559852625 --Donorbox: kantamanto.theor.org 3. DM The Or Foundation if you know anyone facing an immediate medical emergency as a result of the fire. #fashion #solidarity #emergency #sustainability #theorfoundation #ghana #emergency #support #action The Or Foundation Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts
A devastating way to kick off the new year. We are at a loss for words. This is the biggest fire we have witnessed in our 15 years of working within and in service to Kantamanto. The losses are catastrophic & heartbreaking. Our team is in the market, we are in constant contact with community members & we are busy mobilizing a relief effort. Details are still unfolding. For now, this is what we know: + The fire started between 10pm Jan 1st and 1am on Jan 2nd. A cause is yet to be determined. + Market leadership estimates that 8,000 people have been impacted (we expect this number to grow), reporting that at least 10 of the 13 market sections sustained catastrophic damage. Upon surveying the market, we believe that over 60% of the retailer side of Kantamanto is destroyed. + The fire extinguishers we installed with market leadership were utilized. We are waiting on a full report to understand how many were used. We know one section of the market survived because fire extinguishers were mobilized. +Several community members lost consciousness & sustained burns. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported. Our team is checking area hospitals now & will provide immediate support in the case of a medical emergency. Our Response (within the first 24 Hours): 1. We met with market leadership multiple times, gaining insight into their priorities and assuring them that we are here to help. 2. Over a dozen team members have been in the market throughout the day, since 3am, surveying damage and speaking with retailers to gain insight into what happened & what the priorities are. 3. The cleanup effort has been stalled by a lack of trucks. At the request of market leadership, The Or Foundation has paid for one truck to be available today (Thursday) to clean the debris and we have paid for two trucks to be available tomorrow (Friday). We have also coordinated with market leadership to mobilize our Kanta Keepers team to support the cleanup and have offered the support of our 100+ team members. 4. We have committed US$1 Million in immediate relief. These funds will be mobilized based on the expressed priorities of market leadership and impacted community members. We will post updates and maintain transparency of distribution of funds via a Donorbox fundraising page dedicated to this relief effort. 5. We have notified the importers’ association (GUCDA) and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly of our efforts thus far and invited collaboration. Here’s how you can help: 1. Know someone working in Kantamanto? Reach out and offer support and comfort, words of encouragement mean a lot at this time. 2. Donate to supplement our efforts. --Momo: +233(0)559852625 --Donorbox: kantamanto.theor.org 3. DM us if you know anyone facing an immediate medical emergency as a result of the fire. We will do what we can to support them. We remain forever in awe of the Kantamanto community and hope you will join us in support of the Kantamanto community at this critical time.
