Our robust network of approximately 7,000 detection devices monitors the condition of freight cars and locomotives in real time, generating 16 million data points daily to help us proactively identify risks. On Sunday, Nov. 3, clocks will "fall back" an hour at 2 a.m., ending Daylight Saving Time. Did you know? U.S. railroads played a pivotal role establishing the four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific. The time zones were designed to help railroad passengers avoid confusion with the 300 conflicting “Sun Times” locally established at railroad terminals across the country. Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation oversees the nation’s time zones and the uniform observance of Daylight Saving Time. The next time you glance at your watch or phone to check the time, you can thank the railroad for keeping us all in sync — no matter where you are located.

This week, Union Pacific Railroad had the pleasure of hosting an amazing group of collaborators at our corporate office. FHWA’s Community of interest is one of the highlights of my work year, as it provides an opportunity for State Dot’s and railroads to work through common issues, find a better way to meet each other needs, and to help mitigate the transfer of knowledge. Thanks to Chris Bruntz for moderating and leading, Chris Keckeisen for all the work it took to set up a fantastic venue in the office and on the train, Rod Doerr for opening the meeting with a great message on industry safety, and Levi Hawkins, Anthony Anderson , David LaPlante , Dan Leis , James (Jim) Hild , Rick Friesen, PE , and Brian Jeter for presenting from the Union Pacific’s perspective. Kelli Phillips , great session on the attending State’s perspective! Without open and honest discussions it is difficult to effect change. Thanks for helping to get the issues on the table. Christine Bleske, your team provided a once in a lifetime experience for the group, and we cannot express enough our thanks and appreciation for the team’s hard work! The experience provided was the talk of the conference and made a,axing memories for all involved. #BuildingAmerica
