The United Sorghum Checkoff Program was established in 2008 and is overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is responsible for overseeing the formation of checkoff organizations under the authority of Commodity, Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996. The Sorghum Checkoff seeks to improve the profitability of sorghum growers through research, education and promotion.

Recently, seven graduate students from universities across North America, representing a range of disciplines including pet food, poultry, swine and beef cattle, came together for the Sorghum Checkoff's inaugural Sorghum Experience. This exclusive, three-day program provided an in-depth look at the diverse applications of U.S. sorghum as a functional feedstuff for livestock and pets. Participants engaged in industry-focused discussions, deepening their understanding of sorghum’s role in animal health, performance and sourcing quality supplies.
