A PROUD LEGACY Over 180,000 black men volunteered to fight for the Union Army in separate regiments during the Civil War. The Army Organization Act of 1866 allowed former slaves to serve as Soldiers in over 100 significant military engagements during the American westward expansion. These brave men became known as the Buffalo Soldiers and served with pride and distinction beyond the American Plains. Duty led them to the American Southwest, Cuba, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Mexico. Some even became the first park rangers in the Sierra Nevada. Despite the challenges they faced, they embraced the nickname Buffalo Soldiers, which was later incorporated into the crest of the 10th Cavalry Regiment.

Lessons from the Past U.S. Army Reserve Careers Group (ARCG) leaders recently participated in a Gettysburg National Military Park Combat Studies Institute Staff Ride to glean Civil War insights and relate them to contemporary military leadership and decision-making. “Just like back at the Battle of Gettysburg, we need leaders to be able to step up, execute the commander's intent well, but still understand the big picture and what is going on all over the battlefield,” said Col. Marshall Scantlin, previous commander of the ARCG. The Army University Press Staff Ride team hosts over 50 different staff rides to educate leaders and frame situations objectively to analyze key leaders’ decisions. National Park Service
