  • We’ve teamed up with our corporate partners this back-to-school season for our Backpack Drive, to ensure NYC students start the school year ready to learn. Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP’s Women@Weil attorneys network recently hosted us along with UWNYC Women United chapter and allies at their midtown office for our first bookbag packing of the season. Together, we filled over 200 backpacks, each complete with classroom essentials like pencils, scissors, glue sticks, notebooks, and hand sanitizer, followed by networking for volunteers from the Weil and UWNYC communities. Thanks to partners like Weil, we’re easing the stress of back-to-school shopping for families in underserved NYC neighborhoods. #education #learning #students #corporatesocialresponsibility #volunteering #backtoschool

  • Our new United Way of New York City Women United Spotlight series will recognize the members of UWNYC Women United, a professional society of women who support our initiatives. Learn more about Women United: https://lnkd.in/eS9YnT24 Today’s spotlight features Helen Mucciolo, retiring CFO and Head of the Corporate Group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Helen is a longtime leader of the UWNYC Women United chapter, and we are proud to celebrate her impact: “As I retire from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York after three plus decades, I reflect on my good fortune to have been able to work and support both the bank and United Way of New York City,” she says. “Both organizations are committed to supporting efforts to ensure economic equality in our community. When I learned about the efforts of Women United to support reading literacy for the most at-risk children in NYC, I was quick to join. Meeting the teachers, administrators, parents and children involved in the Read NYC initiative in Mott Haven allowed me to appreciate the positive long-term impact of UWNYC. I wish that more New Yorkers understood that, if children learn to read at grade level by the 3rd grade, they have a 74% likelihood of graduating from high school. Graduating from high school and following through with further education has a real impact on one’s lifetime earnings and ability to achieve economic independence. It is so important to get involved in supporting the community around us. Women United has allowed me to make a difference, while being surrounded by an amazing group of professional women connected through a common goal of supporting the United Way of New York City's initiatives.” Stay tuned for upcoming features in our Women United Spotlight series. #WomenUnited #SpotlightStories

  • It was a joy to welcome our food pantry and soup kitchen partners this month for the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) and Nourish NY Awards Workshop. 🥑 🥕 Through HPNAP and Nourish NY, UWNYC distributes annual grants to support NYC emergency food providers, ensuring they’re prepared to serve clients fresh, nutritious foods. This year, we funded 400 organizations from the five boroughs. During the gathering, our team gave an overview of funding, detailed nutrition guidelines, and spoke about available technical support. Our HPNAP food service distributor, Driscoll Foods, also joined the conference for an orientation and Q&A. Congratulations to this year’s grant recipients! Together, we'll work towards a future where every New Yorker has daily access to nutritious food.  #Nutrition #Nonprofit #Hunger

Our President & CEO Grace C. Bonilla, Esq. was honored last night with the Woman of the Year Award at the 16th Annual New York League of Puerto Rican Women, Inc. Scholarship Gala. 🏆 The League is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization which advances Latine women through higher education by awarding scholarships to Puerto Rican women for academic excellence and community service. Our partners from the Hispanic Federation joined us to honor Grace and promote our work in developing a Latine Studies curriculum focused on Latine history, culture, and identities. The night’s honors brought to mind the significance of the Latine Studies curriculum for NYC's public-school students, 40% of whom are Latine and Hispanic, whose stories are often untold in schools. Other honorees of the night included NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, who received the Man of The Year Award. Congratulations to all the honorees, and thanks to our friends from the Tacombi Foundation and exalt for joining us.

📢 Great news for New York families! Yesterday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State has issued nearly $200 million in food assistance through the Summer EBT program. Summer EBT will provide eligible families with $150 per child through September 3rd, and around 2 million children are expected to qualify. We’re proud to support this initiative, which is critical for ensuring kids have access to healthy meals during the summer. With food insecurity on the rise, Summer EBT is a lifeline for families struggling to make ends meet. Earlier this summer, United Way of New York City joined over 150 colleagues on Capitol Hill as part of United Way’s annual Advocacy Forum and Capitol Hill Day. The Forum focused on strengthening our relationships with partners in Washington, D.C. and across the country to build equitable communities where all can thrive.   We met with the offices of Representatives Ritchie Torres, Grace Meng, Yvette Clarke, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Leader Hon. Hakeem Jeffries, and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer to advocate for some of the United Way Network’s priorities, including the strengthening of SNAP and expansion of the Child Tax Credit.     We're proud to advocate alongside our United Way partners and build stronger communities together.
