Employees working at the United Therapeutics Computational Laboratory for In Silico Molecular Biology (CLIMB) are "like meteorologists", explains Joe Bender, Senior Director of CLIMB. The key difference is that his team's analysis and predictions are focused not on the skies above, but on the mysteries within. "We are trying to build a digital model of a human lung that is so faithful to the biology of an actual human lung that the U.S. Federal Drug Administration approves its use to inform the design of our 3D printed lungs." Last week, United Therapeutics had the privilege of sponsoring two luncheons at the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute Annual Congress in Rio de Janeiro—fostering connection, mentorship, and growth within the PH community. On Monday February 3, we announced that the FDA has cleared the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for our UKidney™ xenotransplantation clinical trial. This groundbreaking trial marks the first-ever human clinical trial of a xeno-organ, with the first xenotransplant expected to occur around mid-year 2025. Our mission is to increase the availability of transplantable organs so that we can offer a therapeutic alternative to a lifetime on dialysis.
