Dr. Paul Hick has been an ER physician for 22 years and is particularly passionate about spreading sepsis awareness. He knows timely intervention can save lives by preventing infections from progressing into septic shock and wants everyone to know the signs of sepsis. When it comes to sepsis, Dr. Hick wants you to think T.I.M.E.: - Temperature is higher or lower than normal - Infection signs - Mental decline or confusion - Extremely ill with severe abdominal pain or shortness of breath More than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with sepsis each year but as many as 80% of sepsis deaths can be prevented with early intervention. UnityPoint Health cares for more than 10,000 patients with sepsis each year. In 2023, we formed a multi-disciplinary group of clinicians who collaborate to improve sepsis care using national and proprietary data and evidence. The team designed several treatment plan improvements that have since saved more lives and reduced hospital stay length for patients with sepsis. Dr. Hick has dedicated his career to emergency care, and he calls everyone to join him this month in learning more about sepsis to protect yourself and your loved ones. #SepsisAwarenessMonth #SAM2024

This physical therapist once shared a pool with Michael Phelps. 🏅💦 . A former champion swimmer, he's now helping other athletes feel their best. At 10 years old, Scott Shi moved 1,200 miles away from home to pursue competitive swimmer. Until age 27, swimming was his life — earning him a spot on the Chinese national team and competing in the World Championships. "One of the most memorable moments of my swimming career came in 2009 when I was selected for the Chinese National Team and achieved a top 30 world ranking for the 50-meter freestyle. I’ll never forget warming up at the World Championships in the U.S. and realizing I was swimming next to Michael Phelps! Although he was just leisurely warming up, I like to joke that I once 'passed' him in the pool." Shi says he frequently dealt with shoulder problems during his swimming career. His team hired a physical therapist from the U.S. to work with the athletes and Shi was fascinated by his work. "His diagnostic approach and exercises significantly helped my pain. His expertise made a lasting impression on me, and I knew I wanted to help people in the same way someday. Now, as a physical therapist, I get to work with athletes and others dealing with pain. Being that knowledgeable provider who can help my patients feel better and improve their lives — it’s the best feeling in the world." During Suicide Awareness Month, UnityPoint Health psychiatrist, Dr. Maurizio Pugliese, addresses mental health concerns from kids and teens during back-to-school season based on a statewide survey. "Unfortunately, it seems the return of the school year can bring up feelings of isolation, which probably arises from feeling unsupported in school, like they don't belong or fit in with peer groups. Add the pressure to do well academically and keep up with demanding schedules in a system still recovering from a global pandemic. It's tremendous. As resilient as our youth are, it's no wonder they're struggling. Importantly, the survey also highlights that certain subgroups of children are struggling more, including female students, students of color, LGBTQ youth and students with chronic medical conditions, among others. It's important for kids to know there are supportive adults in the school setting and community. Schools may have a guidance counselor or school psychologist capable of helping. There are also therapists and psychiatrists in the community to provide additional professional support. For parents, recognize your teen may need your support. If they're struggling with school starting up, it may actually be due to depression or anxiety. They may benefit from checking in with you or a mental health professional. Remind them they aren't alone. Also recognize there are increased risks for suicide in youth during this time, and it's OK to ask them if they're having suicidal thoughts. It doesn't make it more likely they'll act on it but actually makes it more likely they'll let you know if they're in danger. The suicide hotline (988) is a resource available 24/7 and primary care physicians, or even emergency medical care, are appropriate options to consider if safety concerns arise.
