Congratulations to Maya, our intern at UVA, for receiving our volunteer of the month recognition for her exceptional service this summer. Maya's research led to the booking of two excellent speakers for our speaker series. Maya also consulted on marketing techniques and how to socialize important credible public health information to at-risk communities. She now serves as our Research Committee Chair leading two people and advancing our efforts with the speaker series and partnerships.

We're excited to have Dr. Jason Heavner, Associate Chief Medical Officer, join us. "Long COVID" Dr. Heavner was the Chair of Baltimore Washington Medical Center's (BWMC) Critical Care and Pulmonary Department during COVID-19. His team’s innovation and expertise resulted in the hospital having exceptional COVID outcomes—outcomes that rivaled national standards. He is intimately involved with BWMC's Long COVID patient group.

In February, Art with a Heart launched an exciting project in partnership with the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center and BWMC Foundation. The collaborative effort will create a permanent mural for the hospital's atrium that honors the sacrifice, strength and resilience of BWMC team members during the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 22nd, hospital team members and patient survivors were joined by BWMC Foundation Board Members, UM BWMC Board Members, Next Generation committee members, and donors to kickoff the workshops. Unity Bands was honored to participate we look forward to the mural unveiling! #Baltimore #nonprofitwork #unitybands

We were able to attend a Townhall with Maryland Senator Ben Cardin yesterday and ask what he sees as the biggest challenge with getting good public health information to at risk-communities. Senator Cardin applauded Maryland as the strongest state with access to healthcare and a model. He admitted that it is an expensive healthcare system and requires a level of sophistication to maneuver it. Senator Cardin also highlighted life expectancy gaps in areas such as Baltimore, where in some areas there is a 20-year gap due to factors such as socio-economic status. Thank you Maryland Nonprofits for hosting the Townhall! 💫
