We are so grateful that a record number of 172 participants showed up ready to run and have fun at our 2024 Flatwoods 5k event at Austin Cary Forest on Oct. 26. Shout out to our "Run like T-Rex father and daughter combo, best friends elbowing and edging each other out at the finish line, kids finishing their first ever 5K, multiple generations making this a family event, FFGS staff and faculty racing through the woods that they teach in and attend events in, and everyone who helped set up, sign in runners, hand out pine cone trophies, and make sure runners had water stations and snacks. And last, but not least, the biggest shout outs to Flatwoods 5K founder John Davis for launching this epic outing and to Ecotourism Prof. Taylor Stein for enthusiastically carrying on the tradition. As Florida Forests Week and National Forest Products Week comes to a close, what better way to celebrate than with a Florida Land Steward Partnership tour of Sparkleberry Farm in Earleton, Florida. Owners Bill Black and Denise Mathews purchased their 80-acre property in 2010 with a goal of transforming the neglected stands of pine, cypress, and hardwoods into a sustainable condition for timber production, recreation, and native flora and fauna. That transformation earned Bill and Denise the title of Florida Land Steward Landowners of the Year in 2022. The Florida Land Steward Program is a FFGS extension program with the mission of helping and encouraging private landowners to manage their lands for long-term environmental, economic and social benefits.
