Bypassed couplers present a multi-million dollar problem for the railroad industry causing track damage, delays and even derailments. In 2024, UNSPACE investigated the feasibility of a machine vision model that could detect failed couplings on train consists before tracks and equipment are damaged during a shove (an operation intended to couple uncoupled cars). When the machine vision model operates from a drone, it sends failed coupler notifications to railyard conductors so the situation can be mitigated before the shove. In 2025, UNSPACE is working on deployments in operational environments, marking a significant step towards a safer and more efficient future for the rail industry. #railindustry #innovation #UAV #technology #safety #efficiency
