Today is going to be my last day as an unemployed person. I start my new role tomorrow, and I’m so excited to share more details soon! What did I learn after 182 days in this job market? It sucks! What did I learn after 182 days in this job market that might actually be constructive? 💡 If I could time travel back to January: 1️⃣ I'd give myself a big hug and 2️⃣ suggest implementing these strategies sooner: 🗣 GET OFF LINKEDIN Literally, what are you still doing here? Sign off after you read this, please. LinkedIn is a resource for networking and research, it’s not the place to find jobs. I think we’ve all learned that this year! My best success was getting off all the niche job boards and using Google to search for jobs. Find the roles on Google, then apply directly on the company website whenever possible. Don’t do job search stuff on the weekends. Save space for your life no matter how anxious you feel about not using every second of every day finding a job. ⏳ THE 24-HOUR SHELF-LIFE RULE This was tough pill to swallow, but no matter if I had a personal referral or not, the main factor in determining whether I got to an interview always came down to one simple thing: how recent the posting was. The last time I was hiring, I received 700 applications in under one day. I get it. So if the role wasn't freshly posted, I decided it was not worth my time. I front-loaded my weeks, applying as early and often as possible on Mondays and Tuesdays in particular, and any job postings older than 24 hours simply became none of my business. 🤸♀️ 👩🎨 DON’T OVER-CUSTOMIZE I used Teal to design an ATS-friendly resume and match it to job description keywords, and I highly recommend it. BUT if I could go back in time, I would not have dedicated as much time customizing as I did! Let this perfectionist tell you: it wasn’t worth it. Have a template ready for each type of role you’re pursuing (especially if you're more of a generalist like me). But if a job description isn’t matching well to the template you already have ready for that type of role, it’s probably not the best fit — or the best use of your valuable time. 💌 BUILD YOUR PERSONAL BRAND Who are you outside of LinkedIn? Who are you when you're not trying to summarize it on a piece of paper? What’s your authentic voice? How can you find ways to use that authentic voice when talking about your career instead of your personal interests? When I started being more vulnerable about the experience of job hunting, it helped me connect with peers and potential employers. ❤️ Best of luck to everyone still looking out there! And to anyone who may have recently landed a new role, what helpful job search strategies do you wish you adopted earlier in your search? I don't mean to be rude, but if you haven't experienced this job market layoffs firsthand, please understand that we've already tried every tip and trick out there. The advice we need should come from people who are genuinely hiring and willing to help others get in the door. We don't need more encouraging words; we have plenty within our community. What we need are referrals, direct contacts with hiring managers and recruiters, and assistance with interviewing. Additionally, many companies prefer hiring highly experienced professionals with 10 years of experience or graduates (due to tax incentives), rather than investing in training for others. We spend a lot of time online, watching others who were not laid off get promoted or find new jobs, and while we strive to be happy for them, it's difficult when we yearn for similar opportunities. We've worked incredibly hard to reach where we were, and having it taken away is tough. We are doing our best to be resilient in our circumstances. What's the point of an aptitude test again... #careers #jobhunt

View profile for Pat Brothwell, graphic

    Content marketing strategist and writer.

I received a form rejection email about an hour after taking an aptitude test as the first part of an interview process. The aptitude test was 30 questions. Half were math word problems (and you “couldn’t use a calculator”—when I tried to “cheat” by opening my computer calculator, the test made me restart since I “clicked out of my browser”), and the other half were spotting the difference between two sets of pictures. Apparently being bad at calculating percentages sans calculator in 2024 was enough to disqualify me from a job that would be “70% writing, 30% marketing strategy." *To those interested, I plan on using ChatGPT, Grammarly, and if possible, calculators, as well as any other technology to make me better at my next job because it is 2024 and it would be silly not to use the resources at hand just to prove that I don’t know…analog for analog's sake is better? I thought this was a tech job, not a hipster convention (as one Taylor Swift astutely noted recently, "who uses typewriters anyway?"). Initially, I planned on reaching out to the hiring manager to press the issue, but if an organization gives this little thought to its recruiting strategy in 2024 (and has that little respect for candidates' time; I'd already written a cover letter and thoughtfully answered several open-ended questions as part of the application), I’m not sure it’s somewhere I’d want to work. As I started this job hunt, I told myself I wouldn’t be one of those job seekers who use LinkedIn to consistently point out what’s wrong with job hunting. However, the first step of a writing-centric job being a 30-minute math test is both ludicrous and indicative of why “finding quality candidates” has been a top business challenge for years now. #JobSearch #JobHunt #AptitudeTest #JobApplication #HRTech
