I nuke a website yesterday. If I lose all the data, I’ll have a lot of explaining to do to the team—and I’ll have a very long three weeks in front of me. The first thing I do is stay calm. I need to assess the damage, before I do anything rash. I still have tabs open from when the website was un-nuked. They haven’t refreshed yet. I copy-paste as much data as I can into Notepad files in case this is all I’m able to get back. I have a week-old backup of the site. That’s lesson number one. Always have backups. It’s older than I’d like, but a week is a lot better than six months. I grab the backup and head into phpMyAdmin to restore the database. Except I don’t have permission to create a database. Never mind that I’m the freaking admin. Stay calm. Breathe. This is probably just a byproduct of the hardening measures I put into WordPress, which, as great as it is, is notoriously insecure out of the box. I probably just disabled some permissions. Somewhere. Wading through a dozen SEO-stuffed help articles to figure out which box to tick or which line of code to delete is a bit too much at the moment. So, new plan. I go into Softaculous and do a fresh install of WordPress. It takes only a minute or two, but any minute spent doing nothing is agonizing. I log into WordPress. The Pages list is empty and the color theme has reset to default. My stomach drops—but this is what was supposed to happen. Let’s just hope things don’t stay empty. I download (or redownload) the UpdraftPlus plugin. I drag my backup files into the upload box. I click Restore. I read through the warnings. I acknowledge. The backup runs. Code whirring past a small terminal window—sand falling through numb fingers. And then—success. The site is back. Total downtime? An hour and a half. One of the worst hours-and-a-half I can remember. Though, if you were to visit the site during that, it’s likely you wouldn’t know anything was wrong because of Cloudflare‘s caching. That’s lesson number two: use a content delivery network. So, what happened? I deleted what I thought was an unused database. See, the site has two domains: the main one, and a redirect. I wanted to delete the redirect’s database because… housekeeping? Saving space? Cleaning up old code? The problem was that the redirect’s database was actually the main one. It hadn’t been automatically relabeled when I moved the site. I was too quick on the trigger, and that bit me in the behind. Three things I’m taking away from this: 1. Backup, backup, backup. I’ve increased the frequency of backups from weekly to daily. 2. Before clicking that delete button, really make sure that’s what you want. And make a(nother) backup. 3. Better yet, just leave well enough alone. That “unused” code or database might not look pretty, but it just might be the only thing keeping your site from sinking into the twilight zone. The site is for South Hall Literary Magazine, by the way. We’re launching soon. Follow for updates, etc.

    • An error message with the following text:

Error establishing a database connection.

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?

Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?

Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.
