Excited to share that for the second year, we're partnering with Boston-area companies for our Imagine Your Future career exploration series! 🎉 We kicked off with Pillar VC, a leading venture capital firm, hosting 30 of our 8th graders from UP Academy Dorchester, where students had the unique opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, investing, and the world of venture capital while gaining insights into the common challenges of running a small business. UP students heard from entrepreneurs and investors and took part in two hands-on activities: evaluating companies for investment and tackling a real-world business challenge to understand the ins and outs of running a company. It was an inspiring, immersive experience that brought career possibilities to life! Their takeaways? 💭 "Being an entrepreneur can be really hard and tiring but rewarding!" "Sometimes there is more than one right answer." "Success can take a long time, don't give up!" A huge shout-out to Russ Wilcox, Kendall Cook, Danielle Johnson, Kofi Callender and Xavier Acevedo for hosting our students and for their partnership in creating this unforgettable experience for them. And a special thanks to our incredible staff, including Michael Bower, who helped shaped the experience, and our board members, Emily Green, Matthew Hanson and J. Gustavo for their unwavering support and dedication to making opportunities like this possible for our students. #imagineyourfuture #careerconnectedlearning #careerexploration #thisisup

14 DAYS until Spark! 🎇 Don't forget to register for our Spark breakfast here: http://bit.ly/4d2IB2o We’re excited to spotlight one of our incredible experience partners, the Gaab Lab from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, joining us for their second year at Spark! They’ll be hosting a station where students can explore the brain and its role in learning 🧠 The Gaab Lab's research focuses on the development of typical and atypical learning trajectories, from infancy to adulthood, with a special emphasis on language, reading, and how environmental factors influence learning. Emily Hu and Liv Baldi, research assistants at the lab, shared their excitement about joining Spark again: "We are so excited for a second year of Spark! We absolutely loved being there last year, and we feel honored to have been invited to spread curiosity for neuroscience to even more incredible students." We’re so thrilled to share the latest results from the 2023-2024 MCAS, and they are truly remarkable! Students at UP are exceeding expectations, demonstrating that with the right support and equitable access to opportunities, they can achieve anything. Here are some highlights: 📈 Our 8th graders are among the fastest-growing students in the state, ranking #1 for growth in schools serving high-needs populations and #2 in all of Boston Public Schools for both ELA and math. 📝 40% of our 8th graders met or exceeded proficiency in ELA—nearly matching the state average, and far outpacing their district peers. 🏆 UP is among the top 5 schools in Dorchester for ELA and Math growth, especially among multilingual learners, who make up a third of our population and outperformed the state in ELA. A special shout-out to our incredible educators and families, whose unwavering belief in our students’ potential makes these outcomes possible. We’re excited to continue this upward trend and create more opportunities for our students to thrive! #MCASResults #studentgrowth #educationequity #thisisup
