We recently kicked off #HispanicHeritageMonth at Upgrade, and we’re excited to highlight some of our team members who shared what this celebratory month means to them. First, we'll hear from Lezly Alvarez: "My parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents were farm workers in the U.S., laboring in fields to provide for our family and create a foundation for future generations. Their dedication not only sustained us but also shaped our identity—one rooted in perseverance, dignity, and a strong work ethic. For me, Hispanic Heritage Month is a tribute to those family members who worked tirelessly, often in harsh conditions, with the dream of a better future for their children and grandchildren. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come as a family—from the fields to new opportunities—and how their struggles paved the way for the lives we now lead."

Last week I had the joy of attending the Lesbians Who Tech & Allies Conference in New York! A few highlights from the week: 🔥 Sessions on the evolution of DEI in the workplace, generative AI-powered growth, and the challenges and opportunities that lie at the intersection of AI, innovation, and society. 🔥 Hearing personal stories and experiences from tech leaders like Rosanna Durruthy, Andrea Brimmer, Reshma Saujani, and Bozoma Saint John 🔥 Fireside chats with revered members of queer community who push boundaries in their own disciplines, like Lena Waithe, Billie Jean King, Shantell M. Martin, Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe, Kara Swisher, and the list goes on. I’m proud to work for a company that invests in my community and sees the immeasurable value in conferences like this one—thank you Upgrade, Inc.!

Upgrade bought a BNPL company last year for $100 million and 2x'd it's revenue from $120 to $240 million. Not bad for 12 months. Some thoughts. #1 multi-product strategy -- Don't think that enough people appreciate what Upgrade is doing. They now have a host of lending products (on top of their bank checking and savings accounts) - credit card - personal loans (debt consolidation, major expenses etc) - home improvement loans and now BNPL BNPL is nice since it adds a short duration product that diversifies their loan pool. #2 capital markets - their capital markets expertise can make adding new products (or acquisitions) accretive quickly. Upgrade has a unique capital markets engine. They send their deposits to credit unions and banks, who in turn use those deposits to fund Upgrade's loans. No one else has cracked a structure quite like this. In particular b/c credit unions are not taxed, Upgrade has access to very low cost of capital. They also have lots of credit unions and banks with whom the partner. This means they have a broader credit box for serving their clients. The company they acquired almost certainly had a narrower credit box with fewer capital partners so they could not as effectively monetize the same leads. These sort of product + capital network effects are what drive aggregation in financial services. It's why banks have lots of products and lots of types of customers and can grown inorganically via acquisitions that are accretive very quickly. Will be interesting to see how Upgrade's strategy and business evolves as they continue to grow!

To beat the summer heat in our Phoenix office, we host our annual party in the spring! Our Spring Family Picnic featured food trucks, face painting, cornhole, a golf simulator, volleyball, a bouncy house, and lots of fun. We loved celebrating another year around the sun with our Phoenix team ☀
