Nora D. Volkow was born on March 27, 1956, in Mexico City, to a family with deep historical roots. She is the great-granddaughter of Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary, and grew up in the house where he died (now the Leon Trotsky Museum). This unusual family history, combined with her upbringing in Mexico, played a formative role in shaping her ambition – to positively influence the world through science. Volkow earned her M.D. in Mexico City before moving to the United States for postdoctoral training in psychiatry at New York University. During her psychiatry residency she began working in PET scan research, exploring the brain’s functionality and organization, laying a foundation for her groundbreaking work at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York 🏥. At BNL, she made significant contributions to neuroimaging research, particularly in understanding the brain mechanisms underlying addiction. This work helped reshape societal perceptions of addiction, framing it not as a moral failing, but as a chronic disorder driven by changes in brain structure, particularly through dopamine. In 2003, Volkow became the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a position she holds to this day. Her work at NIDA, and in a variety of academic and leadership roles, continues to influence both public policy and scientific approaches to addiction treatment around the world. ✏️ Julissa Mora is a Cuban American author and illustrator specializing in children's media, illustrating books, toys, packaging design, and puzzles. Bernardo Alberto Houssay was born in Buenos Aires in 1887 to French immigrant parents. He was a child prodigy with an aptitude for science, and at the age of 14, he enrolled in the University of Buenos Aires to study pharmacy. Three years later, he transitioned to the Faculty of Medicine, where his interest in physiology began to take shape. After completing his medical degree in 1911, Houssay quickly rose to prominence as a professor of physiology at the University of Buenos Aires, transforming the department into a highly respected research department in experimental physiology and medicine on the international stage. He faced near immediate political challenges, including his dismissal from university positions during Argentina's military dictatorship. He persisted in his research at the privately established Instituto de Biología y Medicina Experimental until he was able to return to his professorship in 1955. 🔬 His central research focused on the role of the pituitary gland in glucose regulation and its connection to diabetes. In 1947, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, sharing the honor with Carl and Gerty Cori. He is the first Latin American to be awarded the honor. Houssay’s legacy extends beyond his scientific discoveries, as a passionate mentor to a generation of influential scientists in Latin America, while co-authoring a landmark textbook on human physiology that became essential reading in medical schools across the continent. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honored to acknowledge his legacy, which continues to influence the fields of endocrinology and medical education to this day. 🎨 Julissa Mora is a Cuban American author and illustrator specializing in children's media, illustrating books, toys, packaging design, and puzzles.
