Breaking down barriers one wall at a time

About us

Urban ArtWorks is a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage youth, artists, and communities in the creation of public art that inspires connections and honors their voices. Since 1995, we’ve collaborated with thousands of young people and hundreds of artists to bring art to public spaces throughout western Washington. Our programs foster a renewed sense of connection, creativity, and self-esteem with those we work with. We look forward to continuing to help nurture strong communities by bringing public art to the streets of Seattle and beyond. We envision a world where all people have access to the transformative power of creating public art. We achieve our Mission and Vision through four core programs and services. MURAL APPRENTICE PROGRAM An eight-week arts-based employment program for youth with barriers to arts, education, and employment opportunities. Base Crew A year-round opportunity for teens that have completed the Mural Apprentice Program to continue their arts training with a one-on-one mentor. School-based programs A program that provides opportunities for schools to work alongside our Teaching Artists to explore themes and issues, and design and install art in their schools. COMMISSIONED + COMMUNITY MURALS We work with community organizations and business owners to facilitate interactive community engagement around the research, design, and installation of murals and public art in specific communities.

🖌✨The CID Mural Apprentice Program (MAP) cohort at the Urban ArtWorks studio is underway, with leadership from Teaching Artists Ego Shoreclay @lordego1 and Asha Helmstetter @artsyasha. This talented group of youth apprentices started with a unique challenge: creating a collaborative dragon design. 🔥 The catch? They had to decide together on the design of their dragon— the result was a co-created dragon that started the process of them working together. This set the tone for their upcoming project: designing a mural for Harborview Medical Center's 3rd Ave Center. Come back later for more updates on the creation of their public art. 🐉🌟 #UrbanArtWorks #StudioMAP #PublicArt #HarborviewMural #CommunityCreativity

🌟 Unveiling the 'Mural of Welcome'! 🌟 We’re thrilled to share the finished mural that was unveiled in a ceremony with our amazing partners, including Artolution (@artolution), USA for UNHCR(@usaforunhcr), and the Seattle Mayor’s Office (@mayorofseattle). This mural now shines in West Seattle, symbolizing our city’s embrace of all who call it home. Working alongside muralists Dr. Max Frieder (@maxfrieder), Nahom Ghirmay (@nahom_artsy), and Jocelyn Oats, the Base Crew artists placed their own stories and symbolism into a powerful visual narrative that can be viewed as you walk along the mural under the West Seattle Bridge. The mural includes symbols of family, with images of parents embracing children, and the Seattle skyline—all grounded in the stories of the youth and their communities. From flowers symbolizing connection, to animals representing the First Nations, to a portrait of a Base Crew Students mother this mural captures the heart of Seattle. Thank you to all who joined the unveiling to celebrate Seattle communities.🌆❤️ @refugees @iandraffairs @urbanartworks @nahom_artsy #ArtForSocialChange #WelcomeMural #Seattle #CommunityArt #Resilience

🌟We wanted to share some process photos from the ‘Mural of Welcome’ recently installed in West Seattle. Youth Artists in the Base Crew worked on this mural in partnership with Artolution @artolution and @usaforunhcr @refugees @iandraffairs. Muralist Dr. Max Frieder @maxfrieder worked with Urban ArtWorks Teaching Artist Nahom Ghirmay (@nahom_artsy) and Jocelyn Oats to design and paint the mural. The Base Crew Teaching Artists Felipe Perez (@flipsidesea) and Valencia Carroll (@valenciafinearts ) guided the Base Crew on putting their own aspects of the mural, welcoming, refugee and immigrant communities to Seattle. Dr. Max met with Base Crew before they began painting to share that the City of Seattle is a model City that promotes policies and programs to foster inclusion for all. In fact, 129 languages are spoken in Seattle public schools! 🎨 This project brought together creativity and community, working alongside Artolution, young Base Crew artists have woven their stories into a message of resilience and belonging in Seattle. We’re excited to share more photos of this exciting project, including the unveiling ceremony with all of the mural partners including the Seattle Mayor's office. More updates are coming soon!
