The UCA team recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Every October, this month aims to increase awareness about breast cancer, its symptoms, and the importance of early detection. Breast cancer death rates have slowly decreased- in part due to better screening and early detection efforts, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options. However, for many Georgians without insurance coverage, there are many barriers to accessing screenings and treatment. UCA refers our patients to Northside Hospital for mammograms and breast diagnostic services - made possible through their Breast Cancer Fund. To learn more, please call 404-531-4444. We are grateful for services in our community that work to improve access to breast cancer care! #breastcancerawarenessmonth

Today is recognized as #WorldMentalHealthDay. On average, individuals with a mental health condition face an average 11 year delay between experiencing symptoms and starting treatment. Common barriers to treatment include the cost of mental health care, lack of insurance, prejudice and discrimination and barriers like transportation. Taking on these challenges requires all of us. We are grateful for community partners, like Giving Health and Integrated Counseling Center & Consulting Services that provide free counseling services for our patients, including in-person and telehealth options. If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call the Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL) at 1-800-715-4225. GCAL is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

Join us as we celebrate PA Week - October 6-12! This is a time to celebrate all that PAs have accomplished, highlight the care they provide, and elevate the profession. We want to give a special shoutout to our very own Board Chair, Dan Ayers, PA-C and all the PAs that serve free and charitable clinics. #PAweek #PAsGoBeyond

At this year's Hops for Health celebration & fundraiser, we are thrilled to recognize individuals and organizations that make a positive difference in our community. In addition to honoring Dr. Sharad Virmani with the UCA Volunteer Spirit Award, we will also be recognizing one of our community partners - Atlanta Diabetes Charity - a local non-profit founded by four high school students, Celia Gilliland, Abby Newton, Riley Newton, and MC Gilliland. This organization donates diabetic medical supplies, including insulin, to our patients to ensure diabetes care is available to all. We hope you will join us on October 27 at Halfway Crooks Biergarten for Hops for Health! To purchase tckets online, please visit https://lnkd.in/gmRTQJ44.

We are thrilled to welcome our first social work intern, Hallie Bridgers! Hallie is a first year MSW student at Georgia State University. She will be working to build a community resource referral system at the clinic to connect patients with social supports such as food assistance, utility support, employment, and housing. We look forward to having her join our team this academic year!
