Honored to attend the Open House of one of our most intriguing practice models throughout the entire vast membership of US ENT Partners: the new Dallas-based Direct Specialty Practice founded by Ashley Agan, MD MBA named Scottie! Scottie, Dr. Agan's grandmother's nickname who recently passed away from ovarian cancer, is a rarity (at least for now). Despite the popularity of "concierge medicine" in Primary Care, there are only a handful of ENT physicians practicing in this manner in the entire country. Dr. Agan focuses on the quality of her care, over the quantity of patients she sees, working hard to provide appointments within 24 hours that are as long in duration as a patient desires them to be, with personalized attention emphasizing overall well-being. She also offers a wide range of telemedicine visits to further enhance the convenience & patient-centric focus. It was quite a testament to the high-caliber person that Dr. Agan is that so many of her former faculty, residents, and medical students from UT Southwestern Medical Center attended the event as well! One of the favorite and most influential movies for US ENT Founder & CEO, Dr. Keith Matheny, is the 1991 film "The Doctor", starring William Hurt. In this movie, Hurt plays an arrogant, self-focused surgeon who works long hours, is absent from his family, interacts antagonistically with colleagues, and has poor bedside manner with his patients...until he becomes a patient himself when diagnosed with vocal cord cancer. As he navigates "the system" from the patient's perspective, undergoing radiation to his throat, and then ultimately surgery, his callousness softens to true compassion & empathy for the patients he is gifted the opportunity to care for...and he subsequently imparts that upon the medical students & residents underneath him, assigning them "diseases", and putting them through tests to cultivate the same compassion & empathy for their future patients. The onboarding of new associates at US ENT is similar. While there is so much for new hires to learn about the "business of Otolaryngology", our training also includes on site visits to our clinics, allowing them to experience typical Ear Nose & Throat procedures such as hearing tests, CT scans of their sinuses, nasal/throat scopes, home sleep studies, allergy tests, etc. That way, our team members not only know "what" a certain test or procedure is, they have actually experienced it first hand. Invaluable, and one of the many things that sets our organization apart.
