"In my six years at USA for UNHCR, the number of people fleeing violence, persecution and war has nearly doubled," says Nicole Smith, Senior Manager of Tech Initiatives and Partnerships for USA for UNHCR's innovation lab, The Hive. "Solutions to address the root causes of forced displacement remain elusive. Despite that, we must commit to developing solutions that assist and empower refugees on all steps of their journey." For years, Nicole has been creating new pathways to help refugees through tech-based skills and resources. She believes that centering refugees in the innovation process is the key to successful integration and adoption. Learn more about the work Nicole is doing with The Hive, its innovation methodology and a few lessons she's learned along the way.

“This was a disaster in which everyone suffered,” says Said Khanim, reflecting on the recent floods that devastated Afghanistan’s western Ghor province. When a rush of water came crashing through the doors and windows of her house, Said and her children ran for the safety of higher ground. But in the chaos, her four-year-old daughter, Atifa, was separated from them. Her body was found a few hours later. Thousands of families, like Said's, were devastated during the catastrophic flash floods, which killed at least 347 people and left more than 10,000 homes destroyed. Since then, UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations have been providing essential aid—including emergency shelter, food and medical care—to help communities like Said’s to recover. Read more:
