The HLTH conference in Las Vegas was focused on Healthcare innovation, including women's and reproductive health, artificial intelligence, and partnerships Several challenges for MedTech and digital health companies were discussed, many of which align with the struggles that we see our early-stage companies face when entering the U.S. market. Addressing these challenges often requires a mix of strategic partnerships, a well-defined regulatory and reimbursement plan, and sufficient capital reserves to navigate the complexities of the market. Market Entry Strategy ranked number 3 behind Regulatory and Funding as the area that causes the most issues for companies. One item that proves itself time and time again in our program at USLP is that preparing a regional expansion plan and executing on it is 4X more effective in terms of pipeline development and sales execution, than hiring in region and attempting to execute on your existing home market strategy ***Due your due diligence, Understand the dynamics of the market and Test with your actual ICP, not just experts and consultants.   #HLTH. #MedTech, #DigitalHealth, #MarketEntryStrategy Last week at HTLH in Las Vegas with Bari Kowal: a panelist, speaker and close friend of decades 😊 (https://lnkd.in/grUbbpec)

Virtido, a USA Launching Pad 🚀 client, just finished their stay in San Francisco and are now open for business in America. These are their 3 key takeaways on how to build sales in the USA: 1. Adapt to cultural diversity. People are incredibly open in the USA. Many people moved here from abroad and welcome talking to foreigners. This results in very high willingness to help, but also in quick decline in interest. Americans might be interested in you but not necessarily in your business unless they quickly see what is in it for them. “Interesting” does not always mean “interested,” you must not take rejection personally but as the American way of communicating in a non-confrontational way. 2. Follow up, follow up, follow up. In the USA, following up the next day or even on the same day is considered good etiquette. By doing so, you show professionalism and that you are interested. Hustling is seen as a good thing! European restraint and slow follow-up are seen as a lack of interest. 3. Adapt the messaging. The messaging in marketing materials has to be very different from that in Europe. Otherwise, many Americans won’t “get it.” The key is to tell an emotional story, drive towards conversion, and sell more aggressively. The messaging is so different that a separate US landing page may be needed to avoid offending more traditional European customers. P.S: Here’s a pic of the Virtido and USA Launching teams at the office in San Francisco on the final day of their Launching Pad. Lots of hard work, lots of early calls, and lots of laughs! Thank you, and I am very proud of what we achieved together during the last months: Virtido team with Sebastian Flückiger, Jean-Luc Zehnder, Daniel Hasler and Nina Maksymenko USA Launching Pad team with Mar Navarro Montes, Manan Bhargava, Jen Lum, Laura Leber, Daniela Guerra and Matt DiMarsico.

Helping foreign companies start sales in the USA │ CEO at USA Launching Pad │ Senior Advisor to McKinsey │ Lecturer at UC Berkeley

I started USA Launching Pad 🚀 4 years ago, and since helped dozens of companies start their sales in the USA. Here are the three differences Europeans need to learn to be successful in America. 1. Sell the value. Europeans think in functionalities and product features - resulting in selling with a spec sheet. Americans think in problems solved - resulting in selling with a value proposition. 2. Aspiration is a big word. American entrepreneurs and executives think big and aspirational. They want to change the world and get rich along the way, and they work very hard and a lot for it. Europeans often seek a balance in their lifestyle, leading to smaller ambitions. 3. "Hustle" is a good thing. Americans talk about their work a lot—to anybody willing to listen. They are not shy and willing to put themselves into new or awkward situations to reach their audience. Europeans are more reserved. If they don’t adapt, they risk not being “seen” in the USA. P.S: Here’s a recent pic of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking through the fog. Beyond this bridge, there is nothing but water, the biggest ocean in the world. I am lucky to see it regularly and it reminds me to always THINK BIG!

Zippsafe , a USA Launching Pad 🚀 Pad client originating from ETH Zürich, is transforming how we think about storage solutions. Their space-saving, user-friendly systems are now embraced by healthcare and industry professionals across Europe and, more recently, the U.S. Through USA Launching Pad’s guidance, Zippsafe successfully crafted a strategy for entering the U.S. market. They systematically validated key product features and identified the critical stakeholder groups to address in the marketing and sales efforts. Carlo Loderer, Zippsafe's CEO and Co-Founder, shared three key lessons from their U.S. expansion journey: 1. A strong, experienced project team is crucial for effective market validation. 2. The right validation methodology is essential for gaining accurate market insights. 3. A balance of qualitative and quantitative research helps ensure that the right questions are asked to fully understand the market. If you’re a foreign startup founder aiming to expand into the U.S., follow Carlo’s advice: It is a big market, and only a systematic approach will bring success. P.S: Here’s a pic of Carlo Loderer, Zippsafe 's CEO, at the Swiss Startupdays Startupdays 2024, talking about learnings from pivots (2nd from right).

In the last 4 years, I’ve given dozens of talks for startups from dozens of countries on how to expand to the US Last week Innovit hosted a panel where I spoke to an audience of 40 Italian scaleups and startups, including those from the Fintech & Insurtech Bootcamp. I shared 3 critical strategies for success in selling in the USA: 1- Understanding the problem Solution fit is key to defining your approach. It answers the potential customers asking themselves, “Why? Why does this matter to me”? Show them that you understand their painpoints. 2- Crafting a strong value proposition that resonates with your audience to set you apart. This addresses the “Why you? Why are you different from all the others”? Make sure your company and solutions are recognizably different (and better). 3- Timing matters Understand and be able to explain the “Why now? Why should I take action right now”? If there is no pressing need, risk-averse American managers will not make decisions. Create incentives or demonstrate how much money your potential customer is losing every day by not using your solution. We also discussed the importance of: - Developing a deep understanding of the U.S. sales cycle and establishing a methodical approach to sales. - Tailoring messaging strategies for different buyer personas — Technical, Procurement, and C-Suite — for  clear and targeted communication. - Considerations for a mindshare strategy and an influencer approach to create awareness of your new company (in the USA). - And creating a specific sales engagement strategy and compensation model that align with U.S. market dynamics. A big thank you to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the ITA - Italian Trade Agency and the INNOVIT - Italian Innovation and Culture Hub for hosting this event. I’m eager to see how these innovative Italian companies will make their mark on Silicon Valley! #INNOVIT #StartupBootcamp #Fintech INNOVIT - Italian Innovation and Culture Hub is a groundbreaking technological outpost in Silicon Valley, dedicated to connecting the Italian economic, scientific, and cultural ecosystems with the U.S. market. Team USA Launching Pad 🚀 goes Italy. We met an impressive group of mature #AI, #Fintech and #Insurtech companies at INNOVIT - Italian Innovation and Culture Hub this week. Thanks for having our team in the internationalization panel and as mentors, Alessandro Zago, Alberto Acito and your amazing group.

Just attended an INNOVIT - Italian Innovation and Culture Hub event for Italian FinTech and Insurtech startups who are interested in expanding to the US market. Gert Christen 🚀 and Matt DiMarsico were on a panel discussing internationalization. They focus on reducing risk, saving time, and cutting costs for startups entering the market. Here are their three main takeaways for any company looking to land their first sales in the US market: 1️⃣ Build your network early - relationships matter more than you think. 2️⃣ Adapt your messaging - what works in Europe won’t always resonate in the US. 3️⃣ Understand who are the decision-makers in the US market - get them sorted from day one. If you’re considering expanding into the US market, you should definitely check out USA Launching Pad 🚀. P.S: Welcome back to San Francisco, Matt, I was excited to finally meet you in person!

In the last 4 years, I’ve helped dozens of European startups expand to the US. A stay in San Francisco is part of our program, and I am always impressed how much latest technology and information foreign visitors can experience here in a short time. And how much they benefit from soaking up the unique mindset. Internalizing both is one of the keys to success in the USA. Here are the top recommendations of Roy Voggenberger from the leading Swiss digital agency Unic, who spent a week with me in Silicon Valley. 1. AI is the new oil. And APIs are the new pipelines. 2. Innovation must be driven on 3 levels: At the core, adjacent to the existing business, and with transformational Moonshots. 3. Corporations can’t do it alone anymore: Learn to do partnerships, acquisitions, and startup investments. 4. UX reigns supreme. It’s at its best when you don’t even notice it. 5. “Yes, and” mindset. A subtle shift in mindset that opens up possibilities rather than shutting them down. Spending time in Silicon Valley is a must for everyone expanding to the USA, not just those in tech. Come, be open, and leave with new perspectives and a better understanding of how to work with American customers and partners. P.S: Here is Roy's insightful article on LinkedIn and a picture of his first self-driving car ride in a Waymo.
