A new name has been engraved to the Walls of the Missing at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, honoring U.S. Army Air Forces Flight Officer Robert J. Marsh, reported Missing in Action on June 22, 1943. While his remains were unaccounted for and his name was initially not included on ABMC's Walls of the Missing, a review of the available records by our Historical Services team led to this new inscription. The engraving was completed on Feb. 20, and it was an honor for all our staff to memorialize Marsh alongside one of his crew mates, Sgt. Hugh F. Goswick, also commemorated on the Wall of the Missing. We remember them. 🙏 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gRiGvMYD

The American Battle Monuments Commission marks its 102nd anniversary in 2025. The ABMC was created following the end of World War I, with the primary task of overseeing the establishment of American cemeteries on foreign soil. These cemeteries would serve as lasting tributes to the more than 116,000 American service members who died in the conflict. Initially, its mission focused on constructing and maintaining cemeteries in Europe, particularly those that held the bodies of fallen American troops from World War I. Over the years, its role expanded to include monuments, memorials and cemeteries dedicated to American service members who died in World War II, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars, among other conflicts.
